JOSEPH PULITZER’S EYES WERE FILLED WITH LONGING. His heart seemed to swell with adoration the longer he looked at his beloved, who was perched shamelessly on his writing desk.
“I know I’ve said this before,” Pulitzer began, “but I’ll say it again, my dear. I love you.” He sighed happily, resting his elbows on his knees and his head on his hands, his head tilted slightly as he looked between partially closed eyes at his lover.
Taking his lover’s silence as nothing much, Joe inched forward. “I love you, so, so much,” he whispered. He grew closer and closer to them. His lips puckered and his eyes closed as he leaned in to close the distance.
“DAMN!” he screeched, jerking backwards and falling off his chair. A finger flew to his mouth, and when he removed it, a speck of red was left there. “You sure have one prickly kiss.” In the light from his lamp, it seemed that Pulitzer’s sweetheart blushed.
“Don’t worry,” he assured softly. “I don’t mind.” A cheesy grin crossed Joseph’s face as he kissed his beau once more. His expression twitched when he backed away, another check of his lips revealing another spot of redness.
“Okay, so I might mind,” he grumbled. “But it’s okay, my love.” He reached out, giving his lover a comforting pat. “Let’s head to bed, it’s getting late.”
Pulitzer took his beloved in his arms, carefully as possible. Sleep filled his mind as he crawled underneath his blankets and rested his head on one of the three satin pillows he had.
Turning over, he tucked the blankets around his dearest, smiling. “Good night, lovey-dovey,” he murmured, eyes closing.
Next to him, the bag of thumbtacks sat in silence.

JOE BLINKED ONCE, THEN TWICE. The morning sun shone brightly through the window, making him squeeze his eyes shut for a moment before rolling out of bed.
He stretched his arms upwards, yawning. “G’morning, dearest,” he murmured sleepily, turning to look back upon the bed at his love. His eyes went wide when realized they were gone. “Dearest?”
Hurriedly, Joseph rushed to the other side of the bed and then sighed in relief. “Oh, honey, I thought you were gone,” he whispered lovingly. With an extremely gentle touch, he picked up the bag of thumbtacks and brought it close to his chest.
As he moved out of the room and towards the kitchen to prepare his breakfast, Pulitzer hugged the thumbtacks. He winced at the prickles of pain, but he continued to smile.
Arriving in the kitchen, Joe carefully set the bag on the counter. “Stay put, now,” he advised, wagging a finger. “I don’t want you going anywhere.” His smile broadened. “Though I will admit, I’m happy you decided to get out of bed by yourself today.” There was a flicker of annoyance that crossed his face, as he added the sentence.
Joe ran a hand through what was left of his messy grey hair, dozens of strands falling loosely to the ground as he did so. He brought his hand down quickly, rubbing off the greasiness on his dirty white shirt; because he was balding, he hated to wash his hair, as showering made more of his hair come loose.
“Sorry, love,” he apologized to the thumbtacks. “I really should be making breakfast.” He hesitated on his way to the fridge, looking back at the bag of thumbtacks sitting patiently on the countertop. “You don’t mind that I’m going bald, do you?”
There was an awkward silence that left Joseph flushing slightly. “Of course you do,” he said, smiling. He patted his head and straightened his posture, a creepy grin on his face. “I bet you think I look quite nice with a receding hairline.”
He opened the fridge and retrieved the half-empty carton of eggs from one of the shelves. He also brought out a bowl from one of the upper cabinets and proceeded to crack a few of the eggs into it.
Without bothering to cook it, Joe tipped the bowl’s contents down his throat, finish it with a smack of his lips. “Mmm. Do you want the last of it, Tack-tack, my love?” he asked, extending the bowl towards the thumbtacks. When there was no response, Pulitzer shrugged.
“Not hungry?” he inquired. “If you insist…” He licked the bowl clean and then tossed it into the sink, whereupon he put the remaining eggs back in the fridge.
He moved to the bag of thumbtacks, caressing it sweetly. His finger struck a sharp end of one of the tacks that stuck out of the fabric of the bag, and he leaped back, bringing his finger to his lips.
“Ouch,” he mumbled. “Did you want some egg?” The judging quietness and angry glare from the thumbtacks made his face fall. “I’m so, so sorry, lovey-dovey. We still have some eggs - would you like them?”
The bag of thumbtacks continued to stare at him with an irritated look.
“Of course you want them,” Pulitzer rushed to say. He hurried the fridge, jerking it open. The handle squealed in protest, and the top became loose. It fell to the side, scraping against the formerly pristine silver finish of the fridge.
Mumbling a few curses under his breath, Joe grabbed the egg carton and slammed the fridge door shut. He took the bowl from the sink and washed it out quickly, cracking the remaining eggs from the egg carton into it.
Tossing the empty carton in the vague direction of the trash can, Pulitzer spun about, walking as fast as he could manage without dripping raw egg everywhere. He arrived at the spot the thumbtacks were sitting impatiently and dumped the contents of the bowl on top of the bag.
There was a horribly squishy-sounding splash as the eggs crashed on the bag of tacks. The liquid egg yolk seeped through the fabric, staining it.
Meanwhile, the egg whites spilled mostly across the counter, creating puddles and pooling on the counter. Some of it spilled onto the floor and made a disgusting spattering over Joe’s bare feet and the wooden flooring.
Joe grimaced, lifting a foot up slowly. “Er, uh, enjoy it, my love,” he said, a fake sweetness so thick in his voice that the air wanted to throw up. An affectionate smile fell across his face, though, as he watched the egg continue to pour in through the bag - the thumbtacks really did enjoy raw egg!
He bent down and kissed the soaking wet fabric of the bag. Multiple edges of different tacks jabbed at his lips, but he didn’t mind; it was the thumbtacks’ way of showing affection, after all.
Pulling back slightly, barely a gap between the two, Pulitzer gazed at his love with affection. “I adore you, my dear,” he murmured. “You are so loved.”
Then, still smiling, he leaned in to kiss the tacks again.
