Rammstein MTV masters 2004 - part 6 - translation
And we're back with the next part 😊, again in itallic parts are my comments when i feel it adds to the translation (was published in 2012 on youtube, but seems to be from 2004, so have adjusted the title)
part 2 is unfortunately blocked (maybe there's another link?)
Voice ober (VO): .. in small groups in the experiment room
Paul (P): ..which is very relaxing. Because we have a lot of pigheads in the band, and when a pighead isn't there every now and then, the others are happy, they can take things further in peace and quiet, that would otherwise never have had a chance, like "Amour" for example. .. "Los" ... so songs that, ehm, would otherwise not have made it into the final cut.
Oliver (O): With this record, we didn't try to cut from the start when selecting ideas, but rather, ehm, played around with all the ideas as far as we could take them, until Till came into the mix.
VO: The sophisticated vocal passages are also noticeable in the therapy plate. Who could have guessed at an earlier point in time what a silky voice hid in ex-grunter Till Lindemann.
Till (T): That wasn't really encouraged at the beginning, at the beginning, ehm, when you burst into anger you don't sing like that, now it's comes from the soulful shelf, you just have to sing. Well, I mean, it follows with the song and the text, when you get instruments that somehow scream, and after that the chorus has to be nice and sung, you have to sing on it, somehow, and actually on the albums before that, ehm, there was a small upwards trend, it evolved more and more. In the beginning.. the first record was a pure outburst of anger, that was more talking than singing.
VO: But no fear, Rammstein have by no means lost their darkness and mightiness. They are still the terrible beautiful gloomy rockers. And above all, just like before there is the brazenness with which Rammstein take up topics. Unscrupulous and calculated.
P: We .. think .. mostly not like "is it allowed", "what could he think about it". When we would do it like that.. because you can't think like that, we think "do we like it", "do we have to do it like this now" .. yes.. then we do it
VO: The first single of the new album shocked the nations as usual. Rammstein report back for business.
P: We didn't think that the record company would choose this song. Well we wouldn't have suggested it as a single. Because it's strong meat (Paul uses the phrase "Harter Tobak" (literally "Strong tobacco") which has the english meaning of "Strong meat", the meat in this case is no pun from him to the sung this is about, that is a coincidence from the english phrase).
VO: "Mein Teil" (My part) is trying to document a hitherto unique case in criminal history. A certain Armin M. found a friend over the internet who voluntarily let himself be partly prepared and eaten by him.
P: There once was a man in Germany who ate the other man, Armin M.?..(big grin).. Yes?
Schneider (S): Well the impressive thing about it is that he is not someone who just eats others, but it happened on a voluntary basis. That you can run across someone on the internet, and then the two meet ... and nobody can really do anything against it ... even the judiciary was a little bit puzzled as to how to deal with such a case and then we handled it musically.
VO: Since that delicate topic caused real horror in clean Germany, it's exactly the right thing for Rammstein. The Bild newspaper even named "Mein Teil" as the scandal song of the year. Even the relatively harmless video for the song landed on the index *). A risk that Rammstein is still consciously taking.
S: There's no need to act stupid when you deal with such a provocative topic, a very extreme topic that is offensive somehow and then pretend that it probably interests no one, it is not like that. We know that, eh... it can lead to strong provocation and to divided opinions, but first and foremost it was an interesting topic for us.
*) "The Index" is the short name for "Liste der Bundesprüfstelle für jugendgefährdende Medien" or in English "List of the federal department for media harmful to young people"
