In recent years, in response to the increasing public expression of religion (particularly Islam), the French legal notion of public order has evolved into a vehicle increasingly used to limit all religious freedom, as evidenced by recent legislation and case law in both French courts and European Court of Human Rights. The alarming morphing of the idea of public order into a tool which restricts religious expression reflects a governmental will to create a public social space laïcisized to an extreme which confines expressions of religion to the private sphere, which itself is not immune to further state restrictions.
