LA Things I collected (2016-2019)
Catalog: Below The Underground: Renegade Art & Action in 1990s Mexico at Armory Center For The Arts
I went to a live drawing / performance where LA based artist Artemisa Clark reinterpreted Ema Villanueva's provocative Mexico City street actions. La clase de dibujo libre/Free Drawing Class was a series of life drawing classes in public plazas. During these performances, Villanueva posed as the nude model while simultaneously engaging in discussions with attendees about contemporary issues such as feminism and social justice—using the objectification of her own body as a means to bring attention to pressing topics of the day. This was during the UNAM student strikes in 1999 where federal police violently broke up protests against tuition hikes.
