The battle over the oars Was fierce and ugly Broken bones and friendships Words screamed in foreign tongues ‘He who controls the oars controls the world!’ Someone said it as a joke Like all jokes, half a truth buried under it The battle for supremacy waged – not because We are all in the same boat no, but because Power was there ripe for the piking And there are always those who pick power Over all other choices; meanwhile, those of us – So few, we felt! – at the rudder Tried to steer and not be noticed But every battle for control seemed To manifest more rocks before us Our own desires destroying us Because we learn nothing as a whole Not until the boat is sinking And maybe not even then.
