As we are going to be coming to the end of my Pope Cody oneshot series, I have now been thinking about what I am wanting to write next. I think that we are just going to focus on what fandom we are moving onto next and what character for the moment and then we can decide later on where it is going to be one continous fanfic or just have a series of oneshots.

Figure that considering the last post seemed sometime helpful, I decided It might be nice to give a general coverage.

Here's a TL;DR for those who want a summary

Before we begin...

The earliest kinds of air to air (AAM) missiles were wire guided, such as the Ruhrstahl X-4. Developed by Nazi Germany in WW2 it functions akin to the American TOW anti tank missile it had a wire attached to the end of the missle which would carry the guidance signals, however rather than being beam riding (following a laser or radar beam), they were guided by the pilot with a tiny joystick in the cockpit.

This is known as Manual Command to Line-Of-Sight (MCLOS). These were pivotal to early missle development but were hard to use, due to poor manuverability/handling, plus requiring pilot precision, making practically impossible to use for anything other than bombers. Furthermore the wire produced lots of drag and had limited range.

Anywho, let's get into it!

Fox 1

Fox 1's are characterised by being Semi-Active Radar Homing (SARH). This means that the firing aircraft must keep the the target illuminated/locked with their radar in order for the missle to guide towards it, otherwise the missle will not be able to track and will go 'stupid'. Early SARH missles suffered from being slow, reliability issues, and having poor manuverability. Eventually these issues were slowly refined turning them into missles capable of early Beyond Visual Range (BVR) engagements. These were primarily best used in medium ranges and required notching or terrain masking to defeat.

Such notable examples of Fox 1's are the AIM-7, R-27 and R.530. below is a picture of the R-27:
