6. “Hey, hey, calm down. They can’t hurt you anymore.”

It’s dark when Prompto wakes up.

Unsurprising, since it’s basically dark all the time now.Sound filters in even through the closed window from Lestallum’s busy streetsbelow, packed full of people with disoriented internal clocks. Chaos is normalthese days, though it’s slowly settling the more time they have to becomeorganized and adjusted to the new reality.

He sucks in a huge breath and tries to be quiet about it,but it’s hard to be discreet when you’re tucked in the middle of the bed. Itwas only practical for them to room together once back in town. It’s crowdedenough with refugees seeking safety from the scourge running rampant outside.Sometimes the distance between them still feels too large, ripped at the seamsin Gralea, and Prompto feels his hands shaking as he scratches at his wrist.

“Prompto?”

A hand reaches out searchingly and finds his back, slidingdown the threadbare t-shirt as Ignis sits up beside him. Prompto tries to leaninto it rather than pull away, but it’s hard when the memories of Zegnautus arestill fresh and it’s so goddamn dark.Ignis is murmuring soothingly in his ear, hand rubbing rhythmically up and downPrompto’s back.

“Hey, hey,” says Gladio from the other side, finally wakingup enough to sit up. He cups the back of Prompto’s neck, pulls him in to resthis forehead against his strong shoulder. “Calm down. They can’t hurt youanymore.”

He reaches out to pull Ignis in as well, sandwiching Promptobetween them. None of them mention Prompto’s stuttered breaths as he finallyrelaxes into the hold, eyes stinging as he comes back to where they are. Noneof them mention the ghosts that followed him back from Gralea.

None of them mention the empty space between them.

It settles a little more each day, painful and aching but becomingmore and more like a worn-in coat he wears every day. Prompto wonders if thatmakes him horrible, to actually be adjustingto the loss, but he thinks Noctis would rather his energy be spent helping outbest he can in this nightmare the world has become.

Breathing deeply, Prompto opens the door and pastes a smileon his face. “Wow, smells amazing in here, what’s cooking Iggy?”

It’s silent, everyone staring as he shuffles his feet. Well,so much for that plan.

“Prompto, is there something you’d like to tell us?” Ignisasks and he shrugs.

Noctis’ face is stormy. “Who gave you that black eye?”

“I–I got it in training, alright?”

“Like hell it is. That’s not a fair hit!” fumes Gladio.

And then they’re all around him, fussing with worried handson his face and in his hair, and Prompto knows it’ll be okay.

Hello!! I do not mind at all!!

TGCF (Tiān Guān Cì Fú, also known as Heaven Official’s Blessing) is written by the same author who wrote The Untamed, Mò Xiāng Tóng Xiù. I am terrible at summaries and also my brain is mush after work rn, so this is the summary that I pulled from the wiki:

“Eight hundred years ago, Xie Lian was the Crown Prince of the Xian Le kingdom; one who was beloved by his citizens and the darling of the world. Unsurprisingly, he ascended to the Heavens at a very young age. Now, eight hundred years later, Xie Lian ascends to the Heavens for the third time as the laughingstock of all three realms. On his first task as a god, he meets a mysterious demon who rules the ghosts and terrifies the Heavens... yet unbeknownst to Xie Lian, this demon king has been paying attention to him for a very, very long time.”

Xie Lian is the one in all white, and Hua Cheng is the one typically dressed in red, and usually has an eyepatch. Their dynamic is EXCELLENT, and they so supportive and refreshing to read.

I am almost finished with the novel, and highly recommend it. It is the first novel of hers I’ve read, and now I am planning to read her other two when I’m done. (I’ve seen The Untamed and adore it, but have not gotten to the novel yet!). TGCF is also available as a manhua and donghua, both of which were also excellent!

Anyway, this is a long way of saying that if you are into The Untamed, you will likely enjoy Heaven Official’s Blessing as well!!

12. favorite character to write about this year

uhhh I really have a hard time picking favorites, is it cheating if I just say all the chocobros? I really have such a fun time exploring the different intertwining facets of their relationships!

14. a fic you didn’t expect to write

I think Hold Me Tight, Or Don’t took me by surprise the most? at the time I had maybe two fics to my name and I decided very spur of the moment to participate in the fanweek and it all spiraled from there. it’s still one of my favorites ;; pretty much all of my fics aside from Divenire I had never dreamed of writing, and I’m so glad that being in the ffxv fandom has brought me back!

15. something you learned this year

when to leave something alone! there’s a point in writing where it’s just... time to stop messing around with it and call it good. I have a really bad habit of going back and tweaking things, even posted things, and I really learned to let things live as they are after a certain point - which is great for both my stress and also helps my works serve as a better timestamp in my journey!

25. a fic you read this year you would recommend everyone read

THIS RIGHT HERE ---> The Web by @zanimez . I read it only just the other day but I fell in love immediately and when I finished I was up at night thinking about it. it’s SO! GOOD! I reread it again today and my opinion has not faltered in the slightest. end your year on a good note and read this fic!!

is one I think of all the time, in both with developing skills and generally in life. I feel that it’s very healthy to acknowledge growth and change as well as keep an eye on goals and aspirations!

the feeling you get teetering on the edge of a cliff, a wall full of papers and red strings, fingers grasping just out of reach, a chess board suspended mid game, and a galaxy of stars just before daybreak

20. Post a snippet of a WIP you’re working on.

this is from something quite a few chapters ahead in Divenire, but it’s a part of a whole section I’m really proud of so I want to share!!!

“He doesn’t hit the ground this time. Instead he falls and falls, never ending as he fades in and out of consciousness. He’d abandoned Prompto, or maybe it was the other way around, a cruel twist of fate ripping them apart and leaving them both alone with only their memories. The dark flickers, haze breaking, and he feels a warmth curled next to him, hand cradled between theirs as he falls back under the demand of the fever ravaging his body.

Figures of impossible size twist around him as a distant star falls to Eos. A ring shatters, the blue crystalline shards of magic before searing red burns behind his eyelids.
