Title: Proving Ground Warning: Trickery. The uncertainty of not knowing what’s been built upon until a storm arrives. Rating: PG-13 Continuity: G1, in the same continuity of Foundation. Characters: Jazz/Prowl, Autobots, Optimus Prime. Disclaimer: The theatre doesn’t own the script or actors, nor does it make a profit from the play. Motivation (Prompt): kaedekei and White-Aster’s had a funny idea. My brain immediately decided to play with it. Then someone in Alabama voted, and here's the result. [* * * * *] Part Two [* * * * *]
Character Spotlight: Malcolm Reed
By Ames
Well, we’ve covered the three main stars of Star Trek: Enterprise, and you’ll find that we’re going to struggle a bit more to come up with highlights for the rest of the characters. Maybe Enterprise was more like The Original Series than we thought. But you know what? The hosts here at A Star to Steer Her By came to really appreciate how consistently written our security chief Malcolm Reed really is. You just have to be a little more observant to notice it through Dominic Keating’s accent.
Somewhat like Chakotay, Reed’s characterization has a subtle nuance that doesn’t hit you over the head, but it’s all there: his self-deprecating humor, his stalwart loyalty, his British gumption. It’s easy for your typical Trekkie to commiserate with our explosion-loving friend. His parents kept him at arm’s length, he never seems to luck out romantically (except in Caitlin’s fanfic, of course!), and he might be the most introverted character in the franchise. Can relate! So grab a slice of pineapple cake as we dig into our Reed moments below and on this week’s podcast (jump to 1:04:09). Reed Alert!
Can you tell us more about Proving Ground? Super curious!
So, it's actually quite funny you asked about this one because it's based on your 'Buy Lucanis from the fight ring' prompt 😂 It's pretty similar in the beginning - Veilguard break into Ossuary, only Lucanis has already been moved on - purchased by a group of casteless dwarven slavers to fight in an arena in an unearthed thaig where dwarven Provings would have been held (à la DA:O). Only this is still a secretly overseen Venatori operation, essentially a way for them to advertise their successful abomination-stock to wealthy backers. Lucanis is the first and only success so far, and they're making sure he's advertised. Rook, Neve, and Emmrich infiltrate the arena to find Lucanis and witness one of his fights, and then, to their surprise, there's a sudden unplanned auction for ownership over him (Ossuary news got out, and the dwarves want to make Lucanis someone else's problem before Zara appears and costs them their profits). They have no gold on them and no plan, until Emmrich impulsively bids the highest and wins. He has to use his grave dowry as a deposit, and has no say in the blood contract that is made if he wants to get Lucanis out of there, resulting in Lucanis being blood-bound to him. I don't have the full-fleshed story in mind yet, but aspects/scenes I'm looking forward to are:
- Lucanis and Spite being on much better terms, to the point they only really trust each other at first and it makes it harder to foster trust in the veilguard (especially Emmrich, given the blood contract) - Lucanis and Emmrich being at extensive odds, because Emmrich refuses to break the blood contract (which he's fully capable of doing right away) until he can ensure Lucanis is safe (to himself and others) since he's dealing with deep trauma and reactionary behaviour. - Due to the bloodbond, Emmrich can exert a certain level of control of Lucanis, forcing him to obey commands, which actually helps to protect Bellara when Lucanis reacts to her attempt to heal him with magic (sparking an instinctive, violent reaction) - Lucanis is touch starved, so starts getting hurt purposefully in battle so Emmrich can patch up the wounds (After the incident with Bellara and her magic, they only use poultices and physical treatments on Lucanis, and Emmrich is the most knowledgeable in practical healing and wound care).
I love the tension of not-quite-enemies to lovers, apparently 😂

“Try to remember when you were in their shoes.”
“I wore boots.”
losing my fucking mind watching enterprise because of shran going like "i couldnt sleep bc i owed you a favour" or looking for weeks for archer in the expanse only to show up with his funny antennae and his smirk saying "oh, we just had your warp signature from last time" "also i brought the andorian ale you liked last time 👉👈" all coming up with reasons to help the enterprise. and then tpol saying we shouldnt trust him and archer being like umm actually i think i CAN
now thats homosexuality fellas. dont even get me started on his droopy sad antennae after he betrays archer and has him sent to the escape pod.
