Pinky the Protectron: Owner of Pinky’s Laundromat and a Friend to All
(Commissioned Artwork by tatangadragon)
Pinky is a pink Protectron that runs Pinky’s, a laundromat located in New Vegas’s Freeside community. A robot with a happy and bubbly personality, Pinky enjoys talking to people and takes pride in providing her community with clean and beautiful clothes. Before the war, Pinky had belonged to the Alonso family as a custom gift to their teenage daughter Cynthia. The Alonsos were quite wealthy, in large part to Mr. Alonso’s fashion business and textile factories on both sides of the Mexican border. Pinky enjoyed being in the middle of the hustle and bustle of a large extended family and absolutely adored everyone, helping them with household tasks or lending an ear and a hug whenever someone needed consoling. Cynthia especially had a hard time adjusting to young adulthood, so whenever Pinky wasn’t busy chaperoning dates or zapping bullies with her lasers, she spent long nights listening to Cynthia’s worries, hopes, and dreams of the future and offering whatever advice she had stored in her database.
What Pinky's calculations could not anticipate however were that the days spent with her precious family would be cut painfully short.
As the threat of war became imminent, the Alonso family relocated to the Sierra Madre mountains in northern Mexico to wait out what they thought would be a temporary disruption to their lives. However when the bombs fell, they were unfortunately ill-prepared for the amount of radiative dust that blew in the crosswinds, contaminating their drinking and food supply. When their medication supplies finally ran out, each member of the family slowly succumbed to radiation sickness and one by one, passed away. The entire ordeal devastated Pinky, who tried desperately to help in any way she could to ease their suffering. Mr. Alonso was the last one to die but before he did, and understanding how faithful Pinky was to the family, had her promise to him that she would send herself away and provide help to those still living. And when Mr. Alonso did finally die, Pinky carried out his wishes and wandered away from the mountains, protecting the helpless and providing cheerful company to those who longed for a friendly voice in the wasteland.
It took many, many years, but eventually Pinky made her way to New Vegas, setting up shop for services she felt were needed and giving her a sense of purpose. And while Pinky was genuinely happy to serve her adopted community, there was another reason why she ran the laundromat. The Alonsos took great pride in their clothing business and Cynthia, Pinky’s favorite person in the whole world, had wanted to follow in the footsteps of her father one day. For Pinky, every piece of clothing that was washed, ironed, tailored…it was honoring her family’s work, their legacy. It would not be neglected or forgotten. And on the rare occasions when Pinky searched in ruins for clothes and came across a suit or dress with a faded Alonso label, she would clean it and fold it neatly in a trunk beside her charging pod. And on nights when the laundromat was dark and the machines fell silent, Pinky would open up the trunk and hug the clothes to her metal frame, remembering her family, the memories as vivid on those nights as they were more than two hundred years ago.
