6. The Smell Of Gingerbread And Vanilla
This is literally based on a true baking incidentâŚthat I am massively ashamed of lol. Just in case anyone wonders the believablity of the mistakes made, yes itâs very possible to mix-up, and yes, no one has ever trusted me to bake ever since
Ozzie woke up early the next morning, feeling better than he had, mostly just feeling like he had allergies or a cold. Tyler still felt warm next to him so he decided to let them rest, careful to get out of the bed quietly and walk out to the kitchen. Tyler had mentioned once that they really liked cinnamon coffee cake, that didnât sound too hard to make. He found a recipe book in one of the cabinets and started gathering the ingredients necessary and a bowl.
âBaking something?â Maudie asked walking out after hearing someone was awake.
Ozzie nearly dropped the dish as he was placing it in the oven. âOh sorry, was I supposed to ask first? I tried to clean up but I still have to put stuff away.â
âItâs fine, I just did a grocery run so thereâs no worry of us going short. What did you make?â She asked, looking through the ingredients. âA lot of this makes sense together until this.â She asked holding up a spice bottle.
âCinnamon coffee cake. Thatâs the cinnamon?â
âNo. This is cumin?â She asked showing him the label.
âNope, cumin. Very different.â She responded laughing.
âI thought I grabbed the cinnamon....â
âItâs okay, youâre tired. Iâm sure anyone couldâve made this mistake.â She said trying to stop laughing, pulling the batter from the oven and quickly mixing in some cinnamon to try and save it.
âTyler is going to hate me.â He sighed, sitting down on the kitchen floor. âI tried to make their favorite thing and messed up.â
âHave you met Tyler? That kid pulls pranks constantly, if anything, theyâll find this hilarious.â She promised. âIâll bake Christmas cookies tonight with you two if youâre both up for it. Itâs Christmas Eve after all.â She encouraged, wanting to cheer him up.
âWe didnât miss Christmas?â Ozzie asked excitedly.
âYou didnât, and Iâm gonna go out and get presents tonight so you and Tyler better be asleep nice and early so I have time to do so.â
âWe will, I thought we missed ChristmasâŚgood thing we didnât.â He said smiling brightly.
Once the coffee cake finished baking, Ozzie nervously pulled it from the oven. Maudie sprinkled some more cinnamon on top, cutting a few slices onto plates. Ozzie grabbed one to bring to Tyler.
âI made this for you but Iâm not sure itâs edible.â He said before setting it down. Tyler slowly sat up, giving him a confused look before eyeing the cake and pulling it over to them to try it.
âItâs interestingâŚlot of cinnamon but itâs really good.â They said smiling.
âItâs good? Thereâs cumin in it though?â
Tyler glanced down at the cake and shrugged.
âOf course you mixed up cumin and cinnamon. Still tastes good though, lots of cinnamon, sugar, bread. Amazing. Sugar can make anything taste good.â They said, laughing hard though at the thought of the mix-up.
Ozzie sat down next to Tyler, leaning up against them.
âYour friend said that we didnât miss Christmas. Itâs tomorrow. Thereâs going to be presents and weâre gonna make cookies tonight, like a real Christmas. I thought I was gonna miss my first Christmas, well first real one.â
âThatâs good, weâre going to make sure itâs the best Christmas ever then since itâs your first one. My family did Christmas but it was always justâŚawkward. Maudie does a really good Christmas though, she makes it really fun. Youâll love it.â
âIâm excited, youâve got to get better though first.â Ozzie insisted.
âObviously, I already feel a lot better now that Iâve got you here again. Was worried when I woke up and you werenât here.â Tyler leaned their head against Ozzie after setting their plate down. âCumin not cinnamonâŚthatâs hilarious.â They said leaning over laughing.
âI guess it it pretty funny.â Ozzie said laughing at well.
âCome on, letâs get ready, Christmas starts now.â Tyler said grabbing his hand and quickly hurrying out of the room.
