Selected concept artwork from Lilo & Stitch by Xiangyuan Jie (揭湘沅). Watercolor. 2002.
A native of Hunan, China, Xiangyuan Jie is an oil painter and concept artist who now lives in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Jie has worked on pre-production color concepts for Ice Age 3, concept art for Horton Hears a Who!, background styling for Brother Bear, and concept paintings for Lilo & Stitch.
The depicted artwork consists of colorkeys, concept paintings, and production backgrounds that Jie did for the Disney film Lilo & Stitch, all in traditional watercolors with the exception of some keys. The film’s writers and directors, Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders, opted for watercolor painted backgrounds rather than the traditional gouache technique used for a majority of Disney’s other films post mid-1940s. Jie mentioned on his blog that Sanders’ preference for storybook-evocative watercolors initially scared the film’s team of artists, as it can be an “unforgiving medium to handle”; however, he expressed satisfaction at the beautiful final product.
