hot take:
i’ll advice any parents to send their kid to special education if they have a diagnosis if i would have kids (i don’t want kids) i’d also send them to special education i’m definitely not having kids but the possibility of fostering is something i’m willing to consider
i’m autistic and i wish i would’ve been sent to special education in primary school i would’ve been in a place where i wasn’t looked weird at or bullied (i wasn’t aware that i was disabled as a kid but other kids definitely picked up on it) i’m now in special education in secondary school i had autistic burnout which resulted in me developing ocd, i also have language and speech processing disorder
it has helped me immensely so far (i’ve been there for a little over 4 months now) it has accommodations that i need; it goes at a slower pace with shorter lessons and the same education material that “regular school” has i’m personally in a really specific section of special education that works with a psychiatric clinic where there’s no full time school and no homework i really want to go to the maatwerk klas, which is that you go to school for 4 days and each day you have 4 lessons + you can graduate and finish school at a slower pace so in 2 or 3 years
also no school should infantilise you, regardless of what diagnosis you have you can do so much more if people just let you do it in your way
look, in my country the system already works better than in a lot of other places so this isn’t meant for everyone if i had been born in the usa, i would consider homeschooling and if i were to govern my own country i would make special education the standard
