You were a Parker, Mikeās younger sister to be exact. Currently you were riding around in a trunk, listening to babbling Albanians muffled banter. Every now and again you hear a mention of the ābig indianā and you know itās Kopus. As you bounced around, bumping into the inside of the lid, back and forth. All of a sudden, the breaks were slammed, sending you bashing into the backseat of the car, groaning in pain. Not only did you have bruises decorating your arms, but a few cuts and scrapes from bumps in the road. A loud thump echoes through the little space you were cramped in. Every bone and joint ached from being in such a small space.
Muffled voices outside make you awkwardly comforted. This was obviously not part of the plan as the Albanians were shouting and carrying on. A gun shot echoes, and the deep voice you were hearing was suddenly silenced. Fear begins to ice the red hot feeling of escaping. Shouting ensues once more, and you begin to quake as a key scratches against the truck latch. As if you were free, the truck flies open, sunlight flooding in and blinding you for a moment. As your eyes adjust to the bright sand, they land on the hulking figure laying in the sand.
āPhillip!ā You scramble from the trunk to the ground, skittering across the sand to the motionless body.
āDonāt touch me.ā The body whispers with the tiniest sound. He was playing. You continue crying, hands hovering over his back. You turn to face who you think are the Albanians, to find that Mike has single handedly fought off the three men, and you watch one grab onto a gun. Springing for him, you tackle the gunman, the pistol misfiring in the tussle and shooting you in the upper thigh. Grunting in pain, you add another mental chalk tick to your tally board. Your elbow digs into his chest, pinning him to the ground before you bash his forehead with the butt of a buck knife from his hip.
āEasy Rin, itās over.ā Phillip lifts you away from the body as gently shakes the knife from your hand; he lets it fall onto the earth, sand coating the bloody handle.
āPhillip, I-ā He gives another calming shush, hand putting pressure on your thigh and putting you in the passengerās seat of his truck, letting Mike slide you to tuck between the two of them. āI think Iāve lost too much,ā you breathe deeply and getting very dizzy. āblood.ā And with that you fall against Phillip while he whips into the parking lot of the local emergency room and sprints you inside.
āShe was kidnapped. She lost a lot of blood. Call Harold Jensen.ā He states calmly, almost as though heād rehearsed it. They put in a call to the Captain and he arrives as youāre in for surgery. āThree Albanians kidnapped her. Mikeās little sister. And when they did, they beat her, sheās covered in bruises and cuts, she was shot in the thigh fighting off one of them, but sheās gonna survive. Theyāre all dead. Except one. He got out. Find him. Or they find the bumper.ā He threatens, raising an eyebrow. Of course Harold knew he was referring to the bumper of his wifeās car that was used in a hit and run on the mountain.
āParker?ā Calls a doctor standing at the door. Phillip and Mike spring to action, following him to the room to find you sitting up happy, a smile on your bruised face.
āRin, ya little brawler.ā He gives a soft chuckle as his arms wrap gently around you in happiness; glad to be able to do so.
āYou okay Rin?ā Mike asks, watching in awkwardness as Phillip coos over you.
āIām good. You okay?ā You ask, finding it comforting to have your two favorite people cooing over you. āPhillip, stop. Iām fine.ā You laugh, pawing at his shoulders to get him off you.
āPhillip, she said off.ā Mike growls, grabbing his arm and yanking it away. All in a quick motion, Phillip has Mike against the wall, forearm against his throat.
āMikey, weāve been dating for almost two years, you didnāt know the whole time. Donāt ever try that shit again.ā He growls, turning his attention back to you, watching you laugh at Mikeās shocked expression.
āSorry, Mike. I didnāt know how youād react.ā You watch as the fear dissolves into anger, Mikeās face turning a crimson color as he starts towards Phillip.
āNot here. You go calm down and then weāll talk. Go.ā He growls, pointing to the door. Mike stalks out, slamming the door behind him.
āIām sorry. I didnāt think heād react like that.ā You coo, looking into his eyes.
āItās alright. Iād get mad if the roles were reversed. I understand where heās coming from, but he was gonna kill me.ā He states matter-of-factly, leaving you in shock.
After being dismissed and told to rest for a few days, no strenuous activity, Phillip was waiting on you hand-and-foot, not letting you do anything moderately physical. Mike found this sickening and didnāt visit often. Pressing a soft kiss to your lips, Phillip hugs you close on the couch as he puts on Red Road.

I used to think a lot about fantasy, when I was younger. Magic, monsters, dreaming about growing wings and flying above everything- the stuff people write about, but that doesnāt happen in our world. Iād read books about it, wishing it were real.
I used to think a lot about love, too. The kind where someone is there to comfort you after you wake up from a nightmare, where thereās a cup of coffee waiting for you when you wake up because they know how you like it, where you cook together and get handed the ingredients as you ask for them. The kind where itās okay if you make a mistake, and youāre still held like youāre worth the world even when you mess up. A kind that isnāt transactional. The stuff people write poems and songs about, even if it doesnāt happen in our world. Iād read fanfics, and write stories, and dream about it, wishing it were real.
I didnāt wake up with wings, and there are no monsters defeated with spells and swords. But something I find even less believable has happened, and Iām so, so scared Iām going to wake up. Even if it is real, even if it can exist, I couldnāt ever begin to understand how it would find me. I just donāt get it.
