tbh i don't trust people who are uncritically supportive of complete mage freedom in Dragon Age games. should the Circles be sanctuaries, schools of learning for young mages with the freedom to see their families and live their lives outside the Circles? absolutely. but i don't think we should turn a blind eye to what happens when untrained mages become possessed, or end up dabbling in forbidden magical practices. the Circles should exist to protect mages from those who would do harm to them, as well as protect the common folk from mages who haven't yet mastered their talents. also, we can't pretend as if no mage has ever become prideful or sought power. i mean, just look at Tevinter, where powerful mages are permitted, more often than not, to do unspeakable things in the name of scientific discovery. in Orlais, the power of politics can be just as damaging to a person's life as magic, but even the most notorious political scheming can't RIP A GIANT HOLE IN THE GODDAMN VEIL
magic will ALWAYS have much more destructive potential than a blade or a silver tongue. little else but magic can have serious repercussions in the Fade, for example
My favorite way to play any Dragon Age game is to be a mage who is pro-Circle. I will always be pro-Circle.
Brief backstory of Eric Trevelyan
Young Trevelyan staring up in awe at the massive portraits up his Elder Brothers, Sisters, Aunts, Uncles, Grandparents dressed in their Templar armor, and marveling how the armor makes them look like the Knights in his storybooks. Selfless heroes who shield the helpless from monsters, bandits, and fire breathing dragons.
Trevelyan playing in their room with a toy sword and shield, jabbing the dull metal blade into their stuffed toy rabbit, when the stuffed animal suddenly explodes from a blast of magical energy from the point. Trevelyan's mother and father exchanging nervous looks as their child recounts what happen to Sir Floppy von Bouncing Bun.
Trevelyan being brought to the Circle in Ostwick by their mother and father, telling young Trevelyan that they have been blessed by the Maker, and to use these gift for the benefit of mankind. Trevelyan standing beside the First Enchanter as the Circle's doors close.
Teenage Trevelyan devoting themselves to their studies, steadily drawing the attention of the First Enchanter and Knight-Commander. One night the two bring Trevelyan to the Harrowing Chamber and prepare to send him into the Fade.
Trevelyan reciting the Chant of Light as he journeys to the Fade and finds his demon. The demon makes promises of power, influence, love, wealth, while Trevelyan channels their energy never missing a verse from the Chant and blasting the demon into oblivion.
Trevelyan elevating from Apprentice to full fledged Circle Mage, taking harder studies but also more rewarding. Trevelyan earning respect and friendship from his fellow Mages and Templars. When tension begins to form, Trevelyan using reason to dissuade the more radically thinking Mages from doing something that would jeopardize others and using logic to calm the more militant Templars from acting too rashly.
Young Adult Trevelyan noticing more and more arguments between the Circle's Fraternities after the events of Kirkwall and seeking refuge in the chapel and praying to the Maker that both sides see reason to avoid conflict.
Trevelyan refusing time and time again to assist the Libertarians in helping members of the Circle escape, and the Loyalist from ignoring the acts of the harsher Templars. Trevelyan doing his best to stay neutral and out of the Fraternities and finding himself spending more time in the chapel in prayer than in the mess hall or library talking with friends.
Trevelyan smiling as his First Enchanter and former Master tell him he will soon be taking their own students and that he will help shape a generation of scholars and Mages. The smiling fading from Trevelyan's face at the sound of an explosion rocking the tower. Trevelyan watching in horror as Mages and Templars fight each other with equal savagery.
Trevelyan using his magic to push and move Mages and Templars out of the way or erecting barriers to save them from fatal blows. Mages demanding his aid to destroy the Circle in the name of Freedom, while Templar call for The Annulment in the name of Order.
Refugee Trevelyan forced to flee his second home, and return to his first, and ask for his family's help in ending this War before it claims more lives. Trevelyan, with his family's blessing, heading to the Conclave in Haven to represent the Trevelyan House. Trevelyan refusing to make eye contact with the renegade mages present, as they glare at one of their own standing with the Templars and Chantry devotees.
Trevelyan coughing dust as he crawls from the rubble of Haven, his whole body aching, a burning green light emanating from his hand, and Veil Tear the size of which he had never imagine in the sky above. In his confusion, Trevelyan closes his glowing hand as a Seeker approaches with her sword drawn...
i'm pro-circle in the sense that i think the circle should just become hogwarts yah feel me

So someone was saying that they're definitely not going to like Vivienne because she's Pro-Circle. Pro-Circle does not mean Pro-Templar. It does not mean Pro-Chantry. It means Pro-having-a-place-to-teach-mages-how-to-control-their-magic-and-not-get-possessed-by-fucking-demons.
Pro-Circle is not Anti-Mage or Pro-Templar or Pro-Chantry, oh my fuck why is that so hard for some people to understand? The Circle should exist, it just shouldn't be run by the Chantry. If the Circle didn't exist, then many mages would not get proper training and that would be a very bad thing. So stop hating Vivienne for being Pro-Circle. Because that's not a bad thing . JFC I will bite your ear off I swear.
