The argument isn’t even about whether he's poorly written or handled either anymore imho as anders fans themselves hide behind him being "poorly written" whenever the situation suits them (ie anders approving of fenris being sold into slavery) or him being vehemently hated by the writers to excuse how utterly awful he is as a character and person when arguably there are worst treated races in the games themselves!!

I do like Anders but if I am being totally honest it gets a bit annoying at times when it seem like part of his fandbase is unwilling to admit that although yeah he is queer and a mentally disabled person written by someone who hates mentally disabled people, that still doesn't mean he isn't a white male character and that does in fact contribute to how he is written and treated by the fandom. Like- I don't think lot of people would be half as lenient on Anders being as much of an asshole (I say that with love) as he is if he wasn't white. But complete denial of that fact leads to people claiming that liking or disliking the character can in fact be used as litmus test of progressive though- and this is something not exclussive to Anders I saw the exact same thing happen with Astarion (another mean white guy I admitably like way way less).
And I do get that some people say this as a joke but also it is sometimes really hard to tell which one of you are joking and which ones not so much and it does get tiring especially when Anders being a imperfect revolutionary is kind of the whole point of his character (and no I don't mean the Chantry discourse I mean his absolutely whole thing)- which him being even allowed to exist in that spot, regardless of how the writers may or may not like him, is connected to his status as a white man. The fact that we are presented with a choice how to approach Anders that includes fully siding with him, regardless of writers opinion on the matter, is a better situation then with Sera for example where we can be at best neutral towards her efforts.
