A couple young monkeys squabbling and fighting nearby frightened this little fellow, who scampered to safety atop his mom’s head. The baby then got interested in playing with the top of mom's head, and spent some time up there playing with her hair and scalp, just sort of checking it all out. Meanwhile, mom kept her eyes focused on the chaos, ready to protect her infant from any perceived danger. I photographed this group of monkeys for several days, and felt like I saw changes in the behavior of the super young babies in just that short time. It was also super interesting to see that while there is tremendous competition within the group for almost everything, all the monkeys were unified in protecting the infants. Whenever a situation seemed at all threatening to an infant monkey, all the monkeys would run to protect that baby.
