i ended the last preload post tags with how hes stucked in the middle of 2 extremes and how isolating it must be and it made me realize
lohen is very isolated, both bc of things in his control and things outside it
the only person who can relate to his trauma is Theodore, but they only relate via that trauma. they are otherwise very, very different from one another
even his own parents cant understand him. never noticed his boredom with their quiet, mundane life until it was waved in their face via Cyrus & Lohen announcing he wants to be an adventurer
he isnt actively scorned, ppl dont shit talk him like Eula. but no one has much good to say about his personable qualities either. the "good things" about Lohen are restricted to his work. to how he benefits them. how useful he is to Mondstadt. hell the most positive thing someone has to say about him is probably Mika saying he seems genuine.
lohen doesnt help his own case either
he is alone for long periods of time, enough no one bats an eye when he isnt around for a week, maybe even a few. he actively avoids Adorno, someone who cares about him, bc he doesnt like dealing with "nagging". when he needs a "friend" bc its convenient for him he pays traveler and paimon a "friendship fee"
he acts like friendship and genuine connection are just transactions prettied up into more palattable words. and maybe to him, they are.
after all, his deal with the knights is he handles their dangerous and dishonorable missions in exchange for freedom and independence. his deal with Adorno was the Benevolence title in exchange for permission to join the expedition. his deal with the Traveler was temporary friendship for money.
the other day, i saw a yt thumbnail about dissecting the song Rabbit Hole by Deco*27 as covering loneliness, and i couldnt help but think about Lohen. rabbit association aside, Lohen's worldview is pretty lonely isnt it?
his interactions with people are mostly due to duty/obligation or because someone wants something from the other. he spends 90% of his time alone, consumed by violence. when he isnt, he is prying as much information as he can from others no matter the method required. barely anyone understands him, and fewer want to. he is seen as someone only capable of feral destruction, a weapon to point at the enemy, and lohen has decided there is no point nor reason to prove them wrong.
he has decided this is his life and that hes okay with it. yet, even if he decides hes ok with it, isnt it still lonely? never willing to release the tension built in his body? never able to lower his walls for even a second lest someone take advantage of his "weakness"?
isnt it exhausting, to be prey? prey imagining teeth and claws constantly near?
and the thing about rabbits, is they die from stress

pretty sure this is preload lohen stuff so spoilering
so i mentioned before how lohen memorizes ppls footsteps and while walking i had the thought
"whos footsteps did he memorize first: his parents' or his captors'?"
then i realized this thought implies he learned out of perceived necessity, to hide himself at first. to slip away unnoticed by other the ppl who kidnapped him or the ppl whom he realized wouldnt understand him
it implies a lack of trust. more obvious with his kidnappers, but with his parents it hints he knew them well enough to never knowingly permit something like this. like returning to seek the danger that almost permanently took him from them so soon
and if memorizing footsteps implies a lack of trust, does it imply he is wary even of his own coworkers? constantly aware of their every move so he can predict and react in the case they turn on him? it sounds weird until you remember one of the main organizers of his kidnapping was Eroch, the now infamous traitor of the Knights of Favonius.
Eroch was the Inspector and turned on Mondstadt in the end. Lohen knew this a bit more personally than some. from that line of thought, whats stopping anyone else?
referring to my other preload post, lohen is a hare. lohen is vicious prey, but prey nonetheless. he is a strong human, but human nonetheless. prey must be alert at all times or be slaughtered for their carelessness. it is the law of nature.
lohen being able to differentiate everyone by their footsteps reminds me of the "rabbit hears you mouse feels you" phrase from warrior cats
altho i wouldnt put it past lohen to have that bit of skin on his hands specifically for feeling the ground too
im now imagining bro feeling footsteps from a long ass away from where they are then subtly focusing his ears to immediately identify then categorize information based on it
it gives me vibes of staring into prey's all consuming eyes, them observing and taking in everything bc their life very much depends on it
they are the ones at a biological disadvantage. they dont have room for error. one small slip up is enough to cost them their life
a wolf has to pick their battles carefully. if they get hurt, their middling chances of a successful hunt drastically decrease due to the injury meaning they eat less while injured. and if they eat less while injured, it takes longer to heal. the longer it takes to heal, the longer the low success rate period and the higher the chances of starvation
a hare, on the other hand, does not hunt. it fights with everything at its disposal to escape the jaws of death. does it matter if it might die later? no, because it might die. it might die a second later.
if threatened, a predator may flee to fight another day
if threatened, prey will struggle with every ounce of their being
lohen is just a man. he is someone acknowledge by a divine spirit. he is a normal human. he is not the remnant of an ancient bloodline. he is ordinary in body without his own intervention. he is not supernatural or magical beyond wielding a vision
no, he has no natural advantage. so he makes and learns his own. every single edge he can get. he is no mere prey though, for he too lives to fight another day
