Carbon dioxide at record high level
The level of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the (1) ____________ is now at a record high. An American weather (2) ____________ in Hawaii recorded the new high on the 9th of May. It found CO2 levels were at 400 parts per million (ppm). The (3) ____________ time CO2 was at this level was five million years ago. This was when there were no (4) ____________ on the Earth. Scientists say the 400ppm level is a warning (5) ____________. They say we must do more to stop this number (6) ____________ bigger. However, scientist James Butler said he thought CO2 levels would keep (7) ____________. He warned: āIn eight to nine years, we will probably have seen the last CO2 reading (8) ____________ 400ppm.ā He told reporters that even at the South Pole, CO2 would be above 400ppm.

Pre-Intermediate #2 Must, Mustnāt, & Neednāt
Must + infinitive
I/we/you/they/he/she/It + must + do/stop/go/write. etc. (verb 1)
Use must when you think it is necessary to do something. Ex: The windows are very dirty. I must clean them.
For the past (yesterday/last week etc), we use had to ... (not must). Ex: We had to go to the bank yesterday. (not āWe must go ... yesterdayā)
I must not/mustnāt (do something) = it is necessary not to do it., it is the wrong thing to do. Ex: I mustnāt forget to phone Julia. (= I must remember to phone her) Ā Ā Ā You mustnāt touch the pictures (= donāt touch the pictures)
I need not/neednāt (do something) = it is necessary to do it, I donāt need to do it. Ex: I neednāt clean the window. They arenāt very dirty.
You can also say donāt need to ... (= neednāt) Ex: I donāt need to clean the window. They arenāt very dirty.
Compare neednāt and mustnāt. Ex: You neednāt go. You can stay here if you want.

Pre-Intermediate #1 Can and Could
can + infinitive
I/we/you/they/he/she/it + can/cannot(canāt) + do/play/see/come etc. (verb 1)
can + I/we/you/they/he/she/it + do/play/see/come etc. (verb 1)
I can do something = I know how to do it or it possible for me to do it. Ex: I can play the piano. My brother can play the piano too.
For the past (yesterday/last week etc), we use could/couldnāt. Ex: When i was young, I could run very fast.
We use can you ... ? or Could you ... ? when we ask people to do things. Ex: Can you open the door, please? or Could you open the door, please?
We use can I have ... ? or could I have ... ? to ask for something. Ex: (in a shop) Can I have these postcards, please? or Could I have ... ?
Can I ... ? or Could I ... ? = is it OK to do something? Ex: Tom, can I borrow your umbrella? or Tom, could I borrow your umbrella?
