I have my screen timeout set to 2 minutes, so that if I get up from my computer to go do something, my screens shut down relatively quickly.

But sometimes, Windows gets in the way for a variety of reasons, which can range from "the joystick on your XBox controller is slightly offset and this is registered as input therefore we'll keep the screens awake" to "there is something akin to a video playing in your browser in the background therefore we won't shut down the screens".

This nice app (Monitor Off Utility, by Dekisoft, in case you need to search for an alternative download location) leaves an icon to double-click in your tray to shut down your monitors in 5 seconds after you do so.
