Fascinating aside spurred by the poll I reblogged, but I was doing some digging on Reddit to see what objectum subreddit names are not taken, and I stumbled upon this.
I don’t necessarily agree with the wording ( I think terms like “actual” and “real” can discourage further questioning and ostracize already vulnerable people from what’s a very small community. If the term resonates with you it’s likely for a reason. Saying someone is “not really objectum” outright is very invalidating and frankly none of your business. ) but I do think it’s fascinating that the normalization of “platonic objectum” as a term has been around since the early 2020s and in such number that someone was frustrated enough to make their own separate subreddit about it.
I think this is ultimately the right call, creating your own spaces if none currently suit you, but it is deeply disappointing that this is an issue that’s still making modern communal OS spaces feel unwelcome to those of us who align more closely with the definition as it was described by Eija-Riitta. No public subreddits for us that encourage conversation like the primary one exist. It’s either squeaky clean SFW posting or porn. There is no middle ground outside of Discord servers which often have some barrier to enter.
It’s something I tried to rectify and could not because of circumstances still currently outside of my control. Fingers crossed I guess. How upsetting :(
