My mentality was literally, "why make an effort when the earth is going to 'be renewed and receive it's paradisiacal glory'."

From this point of view, autonomy is freedom from relationship rather than the freedom in relationships. The individual is independent of others, and the social totality is nothing more than the sum of its constituent members. If isolated individuality is privileged in this way, participation in sociopolitical organizations poses a threat to the purported authenticity of the individual.
