April 20, 2023 - Time to learn a few things about Zagreb and its greater area population of 1 million inhabitants.
We have been walking the streets and noting the amount of buildings with scaffolding and building wraps covering them due to renovation or repair. So what’s up with that, I’m wondering. Well apparently there was a significant earthquake here in March of 2020. Guess we were focused on a global pandemic rather than having any awareness of such a devastating event causing over €11.5 billion in damages affecting over 1900 buildings. One person died with 27 injured. And it turns out Croatia has a long history of earthquakes. Did we know this before we chose our destination - absolutely not.
Zagreb was two villages originally, separated by a stream; maybe they are now the upper and lower towns. I did wonder about the lack of a riverfront here since we’re inland. But if you look at a map, the Java river does run nearby but it’s definitely not predominant or a significant feature of the city. Apparently the Java runs towards the Black Sea and not the closer Adriatic.
We get a sense of what eastern bloc countries might feel like although have no firsthand knowledge of this. Language sounds harsh and often like people are arguing, lots of Russian gangster types smoking, generally very tall, lots of black and grey fitted clothing with boots, not many of our smiles are returned on the street, buildings are repeated low rise rectangles with unusual roof shapes and ornate plaster work on top and graffiti on the bottom.
We enjoyed one of the local white wines - Posip with our chicken bowl last night. And when that’s done, maybe we’ll try some Grasvina with some cheese with our friends, Denise and Steve who arrive later today.
We found our tour starting location this morning, Canopy by Hilton and then promptly got lost enroute back. Hopefully we’ll do better on Sunday when we have our luggage in tow.
Stay tuned for more accurate information about Zagreb and other destinations in Croatia once we start our official tour.
Have you ever had a Pošip wine? If Plavac Mali is the flagship red grape of Croatia, we consider Pošip the flagship white variety. A fantastic variety that produces a powerfully flavorful and aromatic wine with an almost oily consistency. Last night’s wine is one of my personal favorites from Stina Vina winery. While Pošip grows many places in Croatia, the quintessential location is the island of Korčula, where the grapes for this wine are grown. $26 in my web wine store. A direct link to this wine is in my profile. —————————————————————— #pošip #posip #croatianwine #croatia #croatiatravel #winesofcroatia #croatiawines #whitewine #whitewinelover #whitewines #stinavino #stinavina #korčula #korcula #winestagram #instawine https://www.instagram.com/p/CL2FawnrL25/?igshid=1smn2n6zl8n1p
New Shipment of Croatian Wines!
New Shipment of Croatian Wines!
New Shipment of Wines from Croatia! Why are we so excited? Because we literally went the entire 2020 without getting any new wines shipped from Europe. Our “regular” wine importing involves flying the wines here, rather than shipping via boat, so that we can get the wines quicker and avoid any adverse temperature situations (too hot or too cold) that sea travel might entail. Our thousands of…

In another unusual pairing I decided to open this beautiful 2017 Korta Katarina Pošip to enjoy with sautéed lamb. Some white wines might not be up to the challenge but this indigenous Croatian varietal certainly held its own. Pošip grapes produce a very full-bodied wine with golden color and depth of texture and mouthfeel. Citrus and stone fruits abound but balanced by a bracing acidity. Grapes sourced from vineyards on the island of Korčula which is regarded as “the” place to grow this grape. A really impressive white wine. $30 in my web wine store (link in profile). ———————————————— #kortakatarina #kortakatarinawinery #pošip #posip #korčula #korcula #korculaisland #croatia #croatiatravel #winesofcroatia #croatianwine #croatianwines #whitewine #wine https://www.instagram.com/p/B3Cp2fcnqCO/?igshid=zmkc546pd3i5
Yesterday we shared Stina Winery’s red Cuvée, today it’s the white. This is another great wine anchored by an indigenous Croatian varietal - Pošip - but blended with 30% juice from two other varietals (Vugava and Chardonnay). At $13 this is a supreme bargain I have to say! This cuvée will appeal to casual wine drinkers and #winegeeks alike. It is smooth and can be enjoyed with or without food. Very aromatic with lovely flavor and a very long finish. ————————————————— #pošip #posip #stinaposip #stinavino #jakovino #whitewine #whitewinelover #instawine #winestagram #croatiafullofwine #croatiafulloflife #winelady #wineangels https://www.instagram.com/p/B1tkn1JH7K3/?igshid=1d2f33xhy5qef
I'm drinking 2 wines tonight, whadaya gonna do? The Croatian posip dutifully melding all of the areas between sauvignon blanc and Chardonnay. Spicy and uric, acidic and well nuanced with a little neutral oak. Deep yellow headed into amber and notes of that come through in the nose too, with a nice butterscotch sort of reduction to it. The Grenachista's Mathis Vineyard pumps a deep ruby in the glass headed out into wide clear edges with a touch of garnet. Meaty--by that I mean raw meat--sagebrush and intense floral play with a fairly serious chunk of alcohol apparent in the nose. Green graphite and cedar just border-lining on eucalyptus make for grenache wet dreams. In the mouth, the Posip again confuses the boundaries of white wine normalities in California. Rich and round with a streak of apple tartness. Blind I think I'd probably say Petit Chablis and be miserably wrong. A long nutty rich finish with more cellar floor makes you smell it again, and still all that quince and cantaloupe is still there. This is a ridiculously amazing white wine--I'm frankly blown away. The Graybehl is a pretty chubby Grenache, and he makes several. Is this the richest and roundest of them all? I decanted this thing heavily, not something I'm typically do for a Grenache but this was just so tight and closed in and I felt it had the potential for being quite large and I wanted to extract all of its softness. In the mouth, a blistering rendition of scales and arpeggios up and down the full spectrum of fruit and spice, but settling on a ridiculously tannic late-midsection which wrestles defiantly with the fruit for domination. Fat cherry fruit is cut short by the frankness of the structure. This is a bruiser. 2017 #stinawinery #posip #dalmatia #croatianwine 13-0 #sophienwaldglass 2015 @the.grenachista #grenache #sonomawinecountry 14-6 #libbeyglass https://www.instagram.com/p/ByEjvpYnS6u/?igshid=aivanz6m96vm
