Saying a fond farewell to Western Australia (Perth, Freo, Bussie) - don’t tell Sydneysiders or Melbournians but it’s probably our favourite part of AU with terrific swimmable beaches and there’s so much more to explore when we bring a RH side driver with us.
Had a final quick stop in Sydney to clock 24k steps from the Rocks to Bangaroo and Darling Harbour to the Opera House. Enjoyed a lovely brekkie (Yorkshire pudding-like French toast with Panko crunch and mango sorbet), dinner at Bopp and Tone (sirloin strip with zucchini orchetti) and an afternoon at the art gallery with new exhibits before the gruelling flight ✈️ home.
Wondering if we’ll return again to this beautiful, sunny winter escape destination but for now it’s see you later, love (or darlin’)🇦🇺🦘🐨 and thank you for keeping us away from the terrible weather areas these last two months.
Last day in Perth and I wonder where the wind will take us today. We’ve really been trying hard to just live in the moment. Like walking through Kings Park. Unfortunately their Banksias have contracted some kind of disease causing them to be all black and dry. I was lucky enough to grab a photo of them in bloom in Fremantle - just like a creamsicle.
Nothing to wonder about this week except why it was suddenly smoky 💨🔥 this morning. Apparently Perth is surrounded by bushfires and the wind decided to remind us. Then as quickly as the smoke appeared, it disappeared and we were able to have a lovely pre-dinner pool swim 🏊🏻.
Last night once again we found ourselves enjoying JC Superstar at the Crown theatre. Just don’t ask what we were doing at the Crown casino beforehand but we did enjoy some incredible art pieces.
Wondering if it’s getting tiresome to mention that it’s our last beach day before we head back to Perth tomorrow. I know boo hoo for us. I’ve been wondering these last few days what awaits us back home. Besides US tariffs.

This Monday morning was spent at South Beach. And being a work day, it was seniors’ hour at least until about 11am; fortunately no thongs, mostly one pieces. All the grey hairs were busy swimming and/or chatting - had to laugh when Craig noticed a guy take his teeth out, wash them off in the ocean and put them back in. 😂
One lovely granddaughter along with her baby brought her mobility-challenged grandmother knee deep into the water where they sat down presumably to help her joints be relieved of any weight just for a few minutes and then they left. A kind gentleman beat Craig to offer her help with the stroller. I wonder if someone is willing to bring me to the ocean even for a few minutes if my knees need it.
Reminds me to be sure to take Edie for a swim this summer.
Coogee Beach again at last. One of our favourites. It was sunny and hot morning when we woke up so nothing else to do but pack a hat and pool noodle, cover ourselves with sunscreen 🧴 (yes, even Craig does) and head to our favourite beach.
We had lots of fun watching a Sunday swimming class of orange capped preschoolers swim out to the dock with parents in tow to slide down onto their waiting noodle and float back to the beach. What an incredible place to learn to swim. 🏊🏻
Just wondering why no local adult uses a pool noodle to relax and float on. Hopefully they are not bad for sealife or some other well known Australian reason.
Our hotel kindly offers a terrific breakfast with Greek yogurt, blueberries and granola, fruit bread and sourdough toast with condiments, coffees/teas and fresh squeezed OJ and later then in the afternoon, a charcuterie snack and a glass of beer/wine, all complimentary. Lovely way to treat their guests.
It’s really interesting observing people who take full advantage of this generosity. I wonder if they have food insecurity issues or are really that hungry or feel hey it’s free, why not. If you’ve ever run or managed a hospitality operation, you realize the margins are so small when guests start overdoing the free food, it means eventually you have to put in controls or simply can’t offer this perk anymore.
Kinda like excessive mining or fossil fuel drilling or overfishing or sailing into unknown waters for spices - hard consequences if there’s no control or regulation. Just seems to be part of humans’ nature.
The following is a quote from the shipwreck museum.
After breakfast we went to the market and when we were finished, found ourselves outside of the Fremantle Oval. We had a chance to watch four teams play Footy. It’s really interesting with the skill of basketball, soccer, rugby and football all wrapped up in one game. 36 players are on the field so it’s a large field for sure. The tackles are only allowed above hips and below neck. And no rucks or line outs, just tosses high in the air by the ref. Really enjoyed being spectators after Craig asked someone for the basics.
We walked to South Beach for a swim in the heat of the afternoon and annoyingly had to walk by literally 10s of thousands of pleasure boats/ships/yachts before reaching our destination. I began to wonder about the need for all those boats since they are not even close to being in the water or being enjoyed by anyone on a gorgeous summer Friday afternoon. And this is just the situation in Fremantle WA. Imagine all the other harbours and marinas with boats stored around the world. Some of these boats were stored three levels high - wondering when they last saw ocean water.
Now we enjoy a sunny calm boat ride whenever invited and we know several friends who use their boats frequently. But I’m not sure all these gorgeous boats stored so very securely are getting used regularly, if ever. I begin to wonder if it’s a good thing to keep making new boats when so many are just sitting idle in storage.
Today I bought a vintage beach dress for $9 from a charity thrift store instead of one of the thousand new ones for $60 or more. Maybe potential boat owners could join the trend to buy “vintage” boats that are not being used or enjoyed instead of new ones. The advantage of a boat is the motor can be upgraded separately so if they come up with another environmentally preferred motor, hopefully you can use it with your vintage boat. Or wondering about Uber for boats or VBRBO app.
Btw my annoyance about the unused boats disappeared at the beach even though there were lots of crazy waves to manoeuvre.
Wondering how lucky we have been with the weather during our AU travels over the last several weeks. I just saw the news that Adelaide hit 43° , Melbourne is in the teens, Sydney had torrential rains and flood conditions and there’s a cyclone offshore of the Northern Territory. We’re sitting comfortably in Fremantle, Western Australia, little cooler than normal with temperatures of 25° to 30° with some wind. 👌🏼
After catching an early bus ride from Busselton (we saw kangaroos 🦘🦘🦘enroute) this morning, we made it to the New Haus hotel, the sister hotel of the shipping container hotel, the Hougoumont, we stayed in last time. Mostly because their fruit bread toast for breakfast is irresistible. 🍞

We’ve now reached the R & R part of our journey. Watching the Super Bowl at 7:30 am in bed then finding a coffee at half time, walking the jetty and enjoying the pool was the extent of our activity yesterday. Congratulations Eagles 🦅
We’ll be doing more of the same as we move locales to Fremantle tomorrow. Today is considering our laundry and travel snack situation and maybe some gym time since the sun has disappeared behind some clouds today.
Wondering why I’m having some crazy weird dreams these days. Like making chicken salad with my son’s ex-fiancée. 🤔
Wondering about determination. We watched the 30th annual Busselton Jetty swim this morning. Thousands of participants decided regardless of the wind they would head out this morning into the ocean to battle the waves for 3.6 km. Starting with gold swim caps then silver then orange then blue then green then mauve then red. I think. In any case, very inspirational. Reminded me of the 1986 Sun Run I did with Bill McComb without adequate training. Sheer youthful determination.
Eating out most of your meals daily sucks. We’re already tired of deciding what we feel like and then trying to find it. Or looking at every menu within walking distance and deciding we don’t feel like any of those foods. Stop already with the chips (fries) served with everything. Stop with charging $30+ for a pasta meal. How do families afford this?
Now being able to go out or buy and cook whatever you want whenever you want, while being on a vacation is obviously a privilege. But I wonder may meal prep delivery services need to partner with vacation suites with adequate cooking facilities to connect their services, along with the critical info on food allergies/intolerances.
Do you hear me, Hello Fresh? You’re almost there - we’ve used your delivery for least three weeks this trip but you haven’t asked about my husband’s lemon allergy and inability to eat nightshades. And please have an option to include the pantry items because I leave a bottle of olive oil and vinegar wherever we go.
Now it’s not easy to coordinate meal delivery service while vacationing because you need to set up an account in the vacationing country and remember to skip weeks, change delivery addresses and then cancel. Maybe instead they could have a vacation setting and/or coordinate something up with Airbnb or VRBO to place meal prep delivery orders at the same time as booking your vacay. Just wondering why not?
Wow 🤯. Unbeknownst to us this weekend is the annual Busselton Jetty Swim of 3.6 km. The place is hopping with activity and it’s stunning.
We are saying au revoir to Perth for now - but we’re returning in a few weeks before making our way home.
It’s a four hour bus coach travel ride to Busselton only 225 km south of Perth on the West coast - lots of quirky stops. Craig is a bit sceptical of this adventure. Why Busselton? Unfortunately our tour throughout south Western Australia was cancelled and the alternative tours involve camping and sleeping on the ground - ah we’re in the Australian outback. 🐍 🐜 so no thanks. We’re hoping this beach town of 40k population, near Margaret River will make for some lovely R&R before our time in Fremantle which we always enjoy. Wondering what awaits.
In the meantime, we used the extreme 34° heat 🥵 to visit the library, museum and art gallery again. We had a tour with Isabella of her fellow Frenchmen, Henry Roy’s photos. Below is my attempt at channeling his techniques.
And in the Balancing Acts exhibition, we were again struck speechless by the killing, incarceration and forced assimilation of the aboriginal people who are so knowledgeable about this continent. And it continues today.
Each aboriginal child is assigned an animal, plant, bird or fish to care for, much like some of our Canadian indigenous peoples and spirit animals. They are also given a scent to activate/rub when they are anxious, scared, lonely. I wonder about the immediate impact if each one of us took responsibility for the care of our assigned living entity and had our own safety scent.
We also watched a very sad short film about a family writing to the government about how they are impacted by the Serbian Bosnian conflict. The mom was forced into premature labour at 7 months resulting in her son needing to be in an incubator. Then the power supply to the hospital was disrupted and her son was left with cerebral palsy. The husband was shot in the stomach and had to use graphs from his legs to repair his injuries, limiting his lifting ability. And his brother was killed. Just recently the government stopped the son’s disability pension when he reached 30 (he’s now about Colin’s age) even though his condition is permanent. They have no real means of income and raise chickens for food and eggs to sell. The son is limiting his diet so he doesn’t weigh more than 60 kg or his now 60+ year old father cannot lift him. Closing shot was of the dad carrying the son upstairs. The son was hopeful the film may draw attention to his dire need for continued support. That was a heavy.
And that made me wonder what did that conflict accomplish? What does any war accomplish except useless losses? Seems so primal to kill or indefinitely impact a human over arbitrary border lines or political and religious differences or simply for power hungry leaders, when we are equipped with supposedly evolved brains and emotions and even AI to solve conflicts.

Wondering what I learned today? I wondered about the white colour in aboriginal art. It is a white rock found by digging in the soil in mostly North West Australia.
And dot painting is limited to certain areas - mostly dry desert areas. The symbols are related to dirt and dust; sitting imprints, water locations and animal and snake prints in dry dirt. Wetter areas are not conducive to dot painting. And Western art was introduced sooner in the wetter areas.
Last night I was wondering about the tariff wars and how Canada would fare. Can we take on a bully? I’m worried now. We were warned about their politics flowing North. Now it’s happened.
I wonder where we would live - Australia? Today was a beautiful hot day in Perth. PS I didn’t know Western Australia voted to separate in 1933.
Wondering if the Westcoast US states should put forth the same separation referendum?
