Happy Earth Day: Post Eight
When you moved away from your rural town to the largest city in the county, you had known that it would be different but honestly, it was just depressing. It felt like there was nothing around you to tie you to nature, but as bad as you felt about it, your Dryad boyfriend and your Oread girlfriend felt worse. They both mopped around the small apartment, rarely going outside because it didn’t feel like it was worth it to them.
It had been hard to leave the mountain and forest that they had been protecting for centuries, but neither of them wanted to be away from you so they had. The two of them bonded over missing nature, and as much as you hated it, it did make you jealous. They were able to bond with each other in a way that you would ever get to. You couldn’t help but feel like an outsider.
However, one day you had seen a sign up list for picking trash up off the highway. Normally that wouldn’t be something you would be into, but at least you will be able to do something outside, and this was something that mattered.
When you brought it up to your partners, both of them instantly jumped onboard. They loved the idea of feeling closer to nature, even if it meant that they were having to pick up trash. After a full day of picking up trash, it was like they were different nymphs. They were excited again, talking about making window planters and maybe buying a bonsai tree. Your Oread boyfriend even mentioned going back to his home mountain and grabbing some rocks to bring back with him for the planters. It made everything feel so much more real. So much more permanent.
It becomes a biweekly activity to go clean up the highway. Your Dryad girlfriend goes to the city and suggests having the medians being no mow areas to allow native wild flowers to grow and bring back more native insects. Your Orean boyfriend supports her, and you do too. You wish there was something you could do to make him feel more at him, but at least he seems to find comfort in the rocks he brought home after the last visit now.
Finally, after all these months, maybe now that everyone is settled, you can get them all to climb back into bed for more than just sleeping.
