As our kitchens fill with silicone items, we can't help but wonder - can you recycle silicone? Sadly, it's not as easy as it can be.
Was almost immediately sold by using silicone as a plastic alternative until I thought about how its recycled once at the end of its "life". Then I realized how little I know about this product and what it even is.
I enjoyed learning about silicone and how it has different types, applications, and recyling methods. I didnt know it was so abundant in the Earth. Its a better alternative to plastic, but, bc its a strong polymer material, it still takes more specialized recycling methods that are less abundant than plastic and require more work to dispose of responsibly. Also it takes just as much energy to manufacture, and subsequently, to recycle. Both are considerations for conscious consumers about fueling its demand.
I still might look into replacing many of my plastic items with silicone, but I'll have to be sure to research where I can submit the materials for recycling once the products reach their end of lifespan, or if theyre damaged beyond repair or reuse. Hopefully the facilities wont be far or accept mail in orders if they are far enough to make the investment worthwhile.
Overall, I'm relieved that silicone is different from plastic (rather than a type of plastic or of crude-oil origin), but still concerned about its impact. I think its still a more viable alternative and will look into investing it in and supporting companies with take-back/recycling programs for discarded silicone.
