âIsnât that Crouch Junior? Letâs go say hi,â Pandora whispered in Evanâs ear but had already started to make her way across the room.
âWait. What? What are you talking about? Why would you want to talk to him? You donât even know him!â Evan desperately tried to fight his sisterâs pull.
âNo, I donât. But you do,â she smiled sweetly. Too sweetly. âYou had the biggest crush on him back in high school.â Ah, there it was, thought Evan grimly.
âWhat are you up to?â He asked his sister in what he hoped was a stern voice.
âNothing!â Evan's only reply was a disbelieving look.
âOkay, fine. Iâm bored,â she dragged out the words. âThis party is so mind-numbing I can feel my brain cells dying. I donât even remember why we agreed to attend. So, we might as well pass the time by getting you a boyfriend,â she declared with a grin.
âWhat,â he deadpanned.
âOh, donât act coy now. I am sick of your wallowing and moping.â
âI do not wallow or mope, thank you very much.â
âYou absolutely do. I know the signs,â she said pointing her finger in his face. But before he could retort she continued her path toward Barty as if she was on a military march.
âWill you stop for just a moment?!,â he hissed behind her, not wanting to make a scene in the middle of this grand hall. âHave you missed the part where there is a very beautiful wife standing right next to him?â
âWife?â Pandoraâs laugh was such a sudden burst it stopped her in her tracks. âDid you twist an ankle jumping to that conclusion? Dorcas is gayer than you and me combined.â
âYou know her?â
âEvan, are you feeling okay today? Weâve been friends for ages. Just last week I told you sheâll be appointed the new managing director after Crouch Senior steps down at the end of the year. Did all thoughts leave your brain the moment you laid eyes on Barty?â Evan could hardly believe her grind could get any wider, yet there it was splitting her face in two.
âHow do we even know if heâs interested? He sure as hell wasnât back at school,â Evan asked instead of arguing with her â there truly was no point.
âOh, sweety. He was interested then and he is definitely interested now. His eyes havenât left you since the moment we stepped in here.â The statement instantly made him look about the crowd and, just as Pandora said, he found a pair of eyes already looking in his direction. He could see Barty quietly talking with Dorcas yet his eyes were transfixed on Evan. The intensity of the look made his insides churn with anticipation.
Before he could react, Pandora tore away from him and practically flung herself at Dorcas.
âOh Cas, how good it is to see you. How are you this fine evening? Letâs get us a drink, shall we?â She rambled on, dragging the confused woman behind her. Which left Evan face-to-face with Barty. Alone. Evan was not freaking out. Absolutely not.
âHi,â he said weakly. Barty was here. In from of him. For the first time in a decade. In a suit. The only word left was hot, bouncing inside his skull like a stray bullet. Â
âHello,â came the reply. His smile was kind. Much kinder than it used to be. It was futile; no words were forming in his brain. Evan knew he was absolutely out of his depth when Bartyâs smile turned mischievous. He stepped forward, right into Evanâs space.
âA little birdie told me you wouldnât mind a little rendez-vous,â Barty whispered right into Evanâs ear, his words dripping like honey. âWant to get out of here?â
A breathy yes was all he could muster and before he knew it the doors to the elevator closed and a warm body was pressed against his.
The kiss was intoxicating and a small whine escaped from the back of his throat as Barty pulled away to straighten up before the doors opened again.
âI wanted to do that forever,â was all Barty said before exiting the lift, and Evan knew he would follow that man to the end of the world.
