“PIMO” is a term used by ex-cult individuals meaning “physically-in, mentally-out.” In other words: someone is still on the inside of a harmful organization and/or religion they don’t believe in or like to be involved with.

These people will attend services, usually under compulsion from parents or spouses, or out of fear of losing loved ones who still believe in said organization, or both.

This situation is, quite possibly, the closest thing there is to being in a dystopian society, short of living in an actual governmental dictatorship; particularly for children who do not have the full mental capacity to understand what they are being forced to do. As a result, children raised in these environments may be extremely mature in some ways, and extremely underdeveloped in others. Often, this leads to problems in their adult lives.

But regardless of age, the PIMO experience is excruciatingly boring, consisting mostly of dissociation, broken by short spurts of intense anger and/or grief.

Likewise, the term “POMI” means that one is not actively participating in an organization, but they still believe in the doctrine. From personal experience, I can say that this is most volatile type of ex-or-current cult member; as something traumatic probably happened to them to make them stop attending services or associating with other members.

This trauma — in most cases, caused in whole or in part by said organization — in combination with maintaining their belief in the doctrine that may have caused the trauma, causes the POMI individual to be put under large amounts of stress. With no cult to put this stress “in its place,” it can easily lead them to depression, anxiety, self-harm, drug abuse, and suicide, among other health conditions. Stress typically increases when the POMI individual has been, or is being shunned by the members of the organization, which is a practice common in cults across the world.

In short: PIMO people have the wrong community; POMI people have no community.
