dude, I love the phlog - no one.
Itâs pronounced âPhlogistinatorâ
I canât think of many weapons that have been as controversial as the Phlogistinator, aka the Phlog. Itâs one of the Pyroâs five flamethrowers and works a bit like this:
Phlogistinator (+) Build âMmmphâ by dealing damage. Once Mmmph is full, taunt to gain crits. (+) Invulnerable while Mmmph taunting (-) No airblast (-) No random critical hits
A full-critical flamethrower is a very lethal proposition, so itâs not surprising that the Phlog has attracted some ire. Letâs dive in to why that is!
only tf2 players will get this

Face says it all
A meditation on Equalization
Ever since the original Equalizer was split into two weapons - the new Equalizer and the Escape Plan - Equalization, capital E, has been an oft-used overly-long verb that essentially means âto split a weapon into two others that use the originalâs attributes without keeping them on the same weapon.â
There arenât many weapons that could be split as easily as the Equalizer could, because of asymmetry in their stats, but itâs a tactic worth noting at least.
Some weapons, as Iâve discussed before, have stats that seem to encompass a whole wide range of roles rather than just a specific niche. In many cases, they have cool and well-made attributes, but itâs hard to keep them on the same weapon. Equalization could be an option there.
Iâve discussed Equalizing one weapon in the past, that being the Phlogistinator, into one iteration that grants health on Mmmph deploy and another that grants the now-infamous crits. Thatâs not a very good choice of weapon to Equalize, unfortunately, because many of the attributes remain the same; it would really only be useful as a beta test of sorts.
A weapon that I might really like to see looked at would be the Cow Mangler 5000. Building disabling is one thing; powerful charged shots are another. (Some reworking to the charged shot mechanic might be necessary if this weapon were to be Equalized). Itâs possible, I suppose, even if it might not be the most mandatory thing in the world. It might also result in some very small weapon niches, which is something to avoid like the plague.
What weapons would you like to see Equalized? How would you do it?
The Phlogistinator
Here's my thoughts on everyone's favorite go back to spawn hose. The Phlogistinator is an extremely powerful weapon, capable of gaining guaranteed Crits just for dealing damage. You thought random crits were bad? This is worse. Now, the phlog does have a substantial downside, that being it has no airblast. That may sound kinda pointless, but airblasting is an important part of the pyro class. Soldiers will definitely have an easier time dealing with phlog pyros, knowing that they can't reflect any oncoming spam (same with demomen, even scouts with the sandman). Plus, while activating that sweet crit charge of death, you're still vulnerable. A sniper could be lining up a headshot, a spy could be behind you ready to poke your spine, or the dreaded mini (or level 3) sentry could be placed right in front of you. All in all, the phlog encourages a hyper aggressive play style, but you should be weary still while using it.
