So guess who spent way too long thinking about the Phase Shifter again because
GOD it’s just So Freaking Shaped in how it works and the rules it’s been established with
So some I have some theories about it, how it works, and some small head canons :D
SO, most obviously about the Phase Shifter is how it works. It’s takes the bot it’s strapped onto and allows them to phase through almost any kind of matter or energy without any resistance or damage.
However, it’s doesn’t phase through everything. If that were the case, then the bot in question wouldn’t be able to hear, be heard, see, or be visible since it would just phase through the particles needed for that to be accomplished, but I’m probably not going to touch on that as much since my Specific Science Knowledge is limited to that one unit in middle school. Since we never see Smokescreen getting burned by blaster fire or the explosion when the base collapsed, at the very least it’s probably safe to say that thermal energy phases through, as well as at least most of the other kinds of kinetic energy.
This also means that when the Phase Shifter is being used, the user likely can’t store heat very well, if at all. It would simply pass through, forcing them at whatever temperature they originally were and possibly gradually getting cooler. On the plus side, they don’t have to worry about over heating, but at the cost of constantly feeling a bit chilly whenever the Shifter is being used. In certain environments it would also likely be easier for them to freeze to death, so a certain amount of caution is necessary
There’s also the established grounding, which prevents someone from phasing through the ground and falling indefinitely. Admittedly the grounding has been….. not inconsistent, but rather difficult to explain. It’s not reliant on gravity to decide what’s “down,” as seen with Smokescreen’s little free fall off the Nemesis, and instead seems to be based on where the User’s feet are, or at the very least the bottom of their lowest appendage(s). However, it does allow the User to go up and down, like during the battle for the Omega Lock where Smokescreen lowers himself into the ground to attack from below.
So tl:dr, I don’t know how it works and am just going to say that the Shifter thinks that whatever direction the bottom of the user is facing is the “ground,” and by changing the position and angle of their feet the User can go into the floor WITHOUT falling all the way though
Slightly looping back to the “What Can And Can’t Phase Though” thought, there’s also the absolute fun and chaos that comes with the fact that wind and air travel through. Why is this fun and chaotic? This means that the user wouldn’t experience any wind resistance or drag and would move F A S T
And to finish it all off, it would probably be a very bad idea for a human to use the Phase Shifter because they would most likely suffocate

Dear Key Keeper,
After the restoration of Cybertron, the remaining members of Team Prime donated most of the Cybertronian tech that they had found on Earth—spark extractors, the polarity gauntlet, the Phase Shifter, the Resonance Blaster, the Liquifier, and, yes, the Key to Vector Sigma—to the Cybertron History Museum, where they would be protected and maintained by civilians and other noncombatants. Although the Autobots intended this to be a goodwill gesture to symbolize that they were done with their war, Cyclonus was able to manipulate coverage of the events and frighten the citizens of Iacon into thinking that Prime’s supporters were using these goodwill gestures as a cover to flood the black market with illegal technology and restart the war. Though these rumors were baseless and nothing more than political mudslinging, it assuredly damaged their reputations and led to their placement on the blacklist of Autobots who continued to support Optimus Prime.
