Ch 92 - pg 02
More distinction between the knee and thigh in the kneepads??Ā
Rating:10/10
When I found myself getting stuck with my concept development, Peter suggested that I try making an x/y map of hotel studies. I was familiar with this method because of the workshop we had with Andrew and Sitraka which I found to be quite useful as I had not encountered this method in the past.
Early on, I had started looking at hotel images online as well as the logos of existing hotel branches but I just had them as digital files in folders. It really helped putting them against each other (especially in a physical setting) because you can spot similarities and differences among the images. For instance, I got a better grasp of the colour palettes used in the hotel interiors and how the traditional hotels (including Crowne Plaza) tend to stick to earth tones while new hotels incorporate vibrant colours.Ā
I used the map to guide me in selecting the colour palette for my identity. I needed one that stood apart from the other hotel chains and because I was sticking to the concept of merging traditional and modern, I also needed a palette that would represent that.Ā
By laying out the core colours, I developed a palette that matched these criteria while also being welcoming enough to fit a hospitality institution. This palette worked well because it was versatile enough to complement the personalised graphics I had proposed.Ā I like that I was able to draw colour inspiration from the environment and that the x/y map helped me approach the design problem from a different perspective.Ā
The Life and Times
For Cycle 2, weāve been tasked to choose a person or a group of people we admire and create a hypothetical installation in their honour. Our group agreed to think of candidates individually and then share our ideas over the weekend. We came up with a range of iconic individuals from Beyonce to Lin Manuel Miranda to Michael Jackson.Ā
Our tutor liked our ideas of having Anthony Kiedis, Pablo Picasso, and Michael Jackson but when our group came together to discuss these choices, we developed a new list, categorising the individuals by their respective fields:
Directors
Tim Burton
Christopher Nolan
Wes Anderson
Quentin Tarantino
Musicians
Pink Floyd
Michael Jackson
Actors
Johnny Depp
We couldnāt yet decide on who we liked the most but we all agreed we wanted to go for an artistic individual who had distinct and iconic traits. In coming up with a decision, we spent the weekend watching, listening, and researching on the artistsā works.
I was keen on Wes Anderson and Tim Burton as directors because of their unique styles and because I admire their visual aesthetic. I had never seen any of Tarantino and Nolanās work so it was exciting to familiarise myself with their movies as they are cult classics. I also wanted to do Michael Jackson because I imagined how glamorous the installation could be.
We made a decision when we met again with Peter during PG02 and we had gone with Nolan because we wanted to focus on the depth and philosophy involved in his films. Iām excited to watch more of his films and I look forward to working on a project that gets me to see more iconic movies.
This was the cautionary tale we presented for BioWatson. All video editing was done by my genius groupmate, Sangwoo Lee.
Coming up with this final narrative took weeks. I believe it took around 6 very different narratives before we came up with this final one. During the 5 week cycle, I think only the last two weeks were spent creating this film. The first two weeks since the brief, our group kept coming up with new ideas and storyboards but our tutor would always ask us for more research to back up our ideas. This worked for us at the end because the tutors said our presentation was very cohesive but it was incredibly stressful going three weeks in and still not having a final story to shoot.Ā
We all wanted to have the shooting done early because (thankfully) none of my groupmates are crammers and we wanted to give Sangwoo enough time for postproduction. But due to all the storyline changes, postproduction still happened only on the last week. This was a shame because we all believe we couldāve done better or we couldāve produced something more "industry standardā if we had stuck to one story at the beginning and developed that further.Ā
I remember at the beginning of this cycle, our group had initially decided not to make a film because we were thinking of the difficulties in production, acting, editing. We considered our backgrounds and thought that going the film route would not have been the best way as we didnāt have experience in it. Itās good that our tutor had told us not to give up to easily and so we were able to produce this piece. It was exciting handling cameras and sets and props as if we were shooting an āactualā film. This is something I hadnāt done before so it was a novel experience.
While most of the editing and direction came from Sangwoo, Iām proud of all of us for coming up with this concept. We all were able to contribute in the production of the narrative and in the filming and so I think the teamwork really paid off. It also helped that we managed to get along with one another. We seem to feel we got lucky with our groupmates and so I think our hard work was worth it and we were able to produce something weāre proud of.
