Angulate tortoise, the only tortoise in Africa with a single throat shield which is its most remarkable identifying feature. The alternating triangles on the marginal shields are another. These tortoises, unlike some others, are still fairly common in South Africa. They are even known as a food source in the rural communities of the Karoo. Because they are hardy and adaptable, they often find themselves as part of the pet trade, even though it is a protected species.... They belong in the wild. You’ve locked eyes with a caged animal on the roadside or in a market for sale. ✖️ The poor creature is in a terrible state, perhaps in a tiny cage, malnourished, and highly stressed. ✖️ You believe that by purchasing the animal, it may have a chance at survival, at receiving care either by your hands or those of a rehabilitator, or maybe you even have plans to release it into the wild yourself. ✖️ A shocking number of wildlife is purchased out of pity, out of trying to help. ✖️ Unfortunately, your money is perpetuating this terrible trade and more animals will be trafficked directly because of your purchase. ✖️ Therefore, I propose that you ask to see the animal closer, ask to hold it (if possible), and then ✖️ STEAL IT. ✖️ Then? This is one of our smallest tortoise species at the zoo and is a Madagascar native. I learned today that they are smuggled for the international pet trade inside vehicle tires since they are listed under CITES. Met these monkeys yesterday: a depressed howler and an agitated capuchin, both rescued from the illegal pet trade. _ Primates generally live in families or large structured social groups and require vast expanses of land for roaming and exploring. _ When these needs are not met, emotional and psychological distress is expressed as frustration, agitation, and depression. _ Sound familiar? Next time you see a tourist post a video, posing with a slow loris from a roadside attraction, remember this! A seriously injured slow loris named Hima has been rushed to our rescue centre in a shocking condition: LINK IN PAGE BIO It is believed that poor little Hima was being kept as a pet but somehow managed to escape from her captors. She is dangerously underweight with a deep gaping wound in her abdomen. The wound indicates that she had been kept tied up with a tight rope around her middle. Our veterinarian said: “The rope must have been tied up really tightly and for a considerable length of time to damage the skin tissue so badly and cause such a shocking injury to Hima’s body.” This tiny slow loris must be in agony. Our team are doing everything they can at this time to help ease her suffering. Please make a donation to help Hima as she fights for her life: LINK IN PAGE BIO We will never know the full details of how Hima came to be in such a horrific condition but it’s certain that she must have suffered dreadfully before reaching the safety of our centre. She is currently receiving intensive medical treatment from our expert team of vets. Hima’s sad story is a prime example of the cruelty involved in keeping slow lorises as pets. Keeping them captive causes them terrible suffering and ends with many of them dying painful deaths at the hands of their captors before their lives can be saved. Hima requires round the clock medical care if she is to make a recovery and we are doing everything that we can - but we can’t do it without you. Please help save little Hima’s life. On the 4th day of volunteering there are four pretty birds. These birds were rescued from animal traffickers. Most of the exotic birds found in pet shops are actually exotic birds who were stolen from the wild. Dozens of birds are taped together, shoved into the ends of plastic bottles, stuffed into old boxes and tried to be taken out of the country to be sold to people. These animals are not pets and should never be. They are #bornfree and should #stayfree .
