Day 14 of Avian August 2025, Birds of Hawaii, hosted by @cookiedoves: ʻUaʻu or Hawaiian petrel (Pterodroma sandwichensis) The ʻuaʻu spend nearly all of their time on the wing, though they occasionally stop in Hawaii's remote, high-altitude areas to lay a single egg per breeding season. Both parents take turns incubating the egg. Once it hatches, they embark on long foraging trips, sometimes traveling all the way to Alaska and Japan, returning at night to feed the chick by regurgitation.
Mascarene Petrel Pseudobulweria aterrima
It is known to breed in very small numbers in the Grand Bassin – Le Dimitile Important Bird Area in the mountains of Réunion. The species is classified as critically endangered as it is inferred from the number of records that there is an extremely small population threatened by introduced species, such as feral cats and house rats, and light pollution. Public awareness campaigns resulted in the finding of 58 Mascarene petrels between 1996 and 2021. Réunion scientists reported this as part of their work to locate breeding colonies using acoustic surveys.

Hello, Aru! I have a question. It may sound weird, but why is it that while all the daisies are skinny from hunger and a difficult life in the forest, Petrel and Egret look like normal beach cats, even though they are the same daisies and they live in the same conditions? They don't seem to be suffering from malnutrition
Hello!
Some Daisys are better at hunting than others, not all of them are as equally starved. Food is scarce, but some will have better luck or skill than others.
They are also both tied to Sturgeon, who has access to good hunting grounds. She can hunt more than her share under the guise of "oh it's for another family cat." and no one would investigate further.
She also personally trained Egret and keeps him informed on where the best places to hunt are. There is no world where she would let Egret go a day without a meal.
