What Lurks beneath- Chapter 34 page 1023
(Read WLB on Comicfury! Read up to page 1031 on Patreon!)
comicfury continues to reign supreme as the only webcomic platform that understands it's a webcomic platform
Is there a character you harbor a secret dislike for?
I like all my freaks as characters
it used to be gull who i disliked writing a bit, but i think that was because she was too dull. Now that she has stepped up her game she has endeared me with her horribleness.
will molly grow a mustache when she's older? :)
Oh I hope so.

PUT THE PUMPKIN. .DOWN
ok
there's something incredibly charming about re-reading wlb and watching the art slowly evolve over time lol
yay! I really enjoy seeing art evolution in comics, it's so fascinating to me.
I especially love looking at panels I remember being SO proud of, and seeing how differently I would draw it now.
I've always liked this panel of Trout from 2019, I redrew it recently for funsies.
Is there any design that changed over the course of the comic- I know thresher had a few markings that got removed on the first few pages and sturgeon had her stripes from the first few pages heavily simplified but I'm curious if there's others
Hake changed a lot! So much so that I actually went back to edit him in chapter 1.
He got a redesign before chapter 2 started, and then of course, he started growing ear tufts.
He's still not right in the edit(neither is sturgeon), but redoing the first 10 pages is on my list.
I’ve been thinking about making my own webcomic, in large part thanks to WLB, and have begun work on adapting an old project of mine into a comic format. But I’m slow at drawing and don’t think I’d realistically be able to keep up with even a once-weekly posting schedule at the rate I’ve been going. Do you have any tips on how to find a sustainable workflow as a comic artist? Or any ways you’ve figured out how to save time & sanity when drawing hundreds and hundreds of comic pages?
Comics! comics!
You get faster with making pages the more you do it. You learn tricks of whatever program / medium you're using. The more familiar you get with it, the more time saving methods you'll find.
I also think it's important to find a level of detail you are comfortable working at. Comics do not have to be 100% of your artistic effort. In fact, comics should NOT be 100% of your artistic effort. That is not sustainable for anybody!
Simplify designs! Simplify backgrounds! Simplify whatever you want to!
I cut corners with backgrounds, I don't like drawing them and the faster they are done the better. I've been trying to re-use them and use blurring methods to save time for headshot panels.
I typically do 1 full page set of new backgrounds, and then copy and paste from there for the rest of the scene. Editing as needed and doing new ones where necessary.
I do this a lot for forests especially, because they are time consuming and my enemy.
(foreground rocks are on their own layer, I placed them as needed to fill the panels)
And I reused these as much as I could for the rest of the scene and blurred them as needed for headshots.
If you plan really well, you can reuse assets you make ahead of time to a very efficient degree, I am bad at this planning and will usually just use whatever I do in set 1 of a scene.
There are other ways to save time too!
You do not have to shade, you do not have to have clean lineart, you do not have to detail backgrounds. Some of my favorite comics do none of these things.
And you do NOT have to be consistent! You can shade dramatically for a scene that calls for it, and then decide it's not necessary for others. It's okay to try new things! Webcomics are very known for style and art fluctuation, and it's one of my favorite things about it!
I would say focus your effort where you have fun, and find the quickest means for anything else. I spend the most time on my lineart because I enjoy doing lineart.
Good luck on your comicing journey! I hope you enjoy it!

I LOVE THIS COMIC AND THE ARTSTYLE IS TOP TIER *throws rainbow sprinkles at you*
IM GLAD YOURE ENJOYING IT! THANK YOU!

Someone might have asked this already—I don't know. Does the comic have a projected ending? If so, for how many characters could that ending be at least halfway good?
Wlb has an ending, but i do not wish to say much more on it!
if they weren't siblings, would sturgeon kill trout over the daisy situation?
I think too much about their situation would change entirely if they weren't siblings. So much about how they were raised is dependent on them growing up together. If Sturgeon weren't there to protect Hake and Trout from Thresher as best she could, they'd be different cats.
I don't think Sturgeon would still be part of the family if she wasn't Threshers daughter and hadn't been made an heir. She probably would have stayed a few more weeks and then become a Daisy herself out of grief for the religion that would let her mother die.
I don't think Trout and Hake would be such gentle/fragile personalities if Thresher raised them to the fullest degree.
I'm overthinking this entirely, but so much about their situation changes fundamentally if they weren't siblings and its breaking my brain a little.
Maybe yeah, a Sturgeon who didn't know Trout would want to kill her for what she's done. But in a world where Sturgeon and Trout didn't know each other, this wouldnt have happened.

Can Family cats be named other sea related things or just fish?
They can be named after other things, they just consider it a high honor to name themselves after ocean things.

Do you have any characters you regret killing off? If so, who?
I have characters I miss writing, but I don't regret killing them off (or sending them ambiguously into the sea).
