Today we meet Jessica Colvin. A 29 year old and pure bred Perthian. Jess's Husband and Her both grew up in the Joondalup area and became good friends in high school. They have an awesome little boy together and finally tied the know last year. In Feb 2015 Jess lauched Perth Online Homewares Store Elva Hem. How and Why did you started your business? It was something I had always wanted to do but had always put it off as one of those things that I would do 'one day when time is right' or 'one day when I feel more ready'. Around this time last year I bumped into Natalie the designer of Perth label At Piece. It had been about a year since I had seen her and I was so impressed to learn that in that time she had self funded and designed her own fashion line. At the time she was on the verge of launching her brand. I told her my own dream of owning my store but I lamented that I didn't know when I would actually start working on it. She replied with something to the effect of "just do it. What is the point of waiting?" I realised she was right so I decided to feel the fear and do it anyway. I dedicated the next few months to contacting suppliers, building the website and absorbing as much business knowledge as I could. Elva Hem launched in Feb 2015 and I haven't looked back since. Where is your store / business located? What will be find in there? At ElvaHem.com you will find a carefully assembled range of homewares and gifts with a classic, modern edge. Think lots of black and white, neutral tones and textures, chilled out Scandinavian influences, and classic silhouettes with updated, clever details. Everything in stock has been personally chosen by me. We stock some intentional labels like but I do have a soft spot for the Australian brands we carry. Customers can find Elva Hem online and occasionally at Pop-Up locations around Perth. Where did your business name come from? Elva Hem translates to 'Eleven Home' in Swedish. The number 11 is a master number in numerology and has personal significance to me. The use of Swedish over English is a little nod to my love of Scandinavian design. What do you find is the biggest challenge when owning you own business? For me a personal challenge is trying to get across to people that this is not just a hobby. Elva Hem is still in it's infancy but that doesn't mean that I don't have grand plans for it. I think this is probably something a lot of women can relate to. Your best moment so far in your business? Being made redundant from my day job. It gave me the opportunity to give complete focus to Elva Hem and I have absolutely seen the benefits from not having to divide my time. It's been quite rewarding to see that taking a chance and fully backing myself is paying off. Your favourite quote or mantra "Don't compare your beginning to someone else's middle" Jon Acuff. I constantly have to remind myself of this at the moment. Who do you look up to for inspiration or admire for their Business growth? Tracey from Cranmore Home is a fellow Western Australian business woman that I greatly admire. She has built such an incredible brand in 5 short years. I love that she hasn't let being a mother or living regionally get in the way of her success. She is a huge source of inspiration to me. What is your advice to Perth Women wanting to start their own business or turning their hobby into a small business? Just do it! It's true that if you don't give it a go you will never find out what could have been. And remember, there is enough success to go around for all of us. There is absolutely no reason why we all can't get in the mix and create amazing business and opportunities for one another. What is your vision for your business? The main aim is to open an Elva Hem brick and mortar store in WA. I'm a big believer in having a vision and a goal but at the same time staying open to possibilities you can't even predict. So whether that is in 6 months or 5 years, I don't know. But one way or another, it's going to happen.
