My friends, every two years The Guardian runs a competition to select the Australian Bird of the Year. The winners are generally the usual suspects—the jokesters, the cult favourites, the colourful parrots.

This year the population seems to have decided the Tawny Frogmouth should win. Are they cute? Yes, they're most deranged, HOWEVER, there is one who fights for the forces of evil and likes to sit outside my room and keep me awake all night.

Ergo, I ask that you spare a moment of your time to vote for the humble crested pigeon. I have a little friend like this who's a lone wolf—no friends, no partner, he simply hangs out here with me daily and he is the sweetest. They warn others while fleeing danger! The males take on half the child rearing! They have a mohawk! There is no better candidate for Australian Bird of the Year.

3000 people vote for the Tawny each day and only 600 for my lil guy. The bottom five are eliminated each night and the next day the process starts over. I do not want to see my friend voted off the island tomorrow! Nay!! EVER!!
