We all know that birth control pills can be used by many people for a number of reasons. Some use it because they don’t want to become pregnant, some to regulate painful periods, some to quell the symptoms of conditions like Poly cystic Ovary Syndrome and Endometriosis.
Whatever the intended result, obtaining birth control medication isn’t always as easy as it should be. In some areas organizations like Planned Parenthood are disappearing and people who need and/or benefit from birth control and don’t have support (financial, familial, or otherwise) are left without options.
That’s why I chose to try out a new app called Nurx. Nurx was created to provide birth control access to areas that are considered “contraceptive deserts”. The app is pretty simple, all you have to do is take a picture of your ID and insurance card (if you have one), answer a few questions about your health, what kind of birth control works or does not work for you, and what kind of insurance you have, if applicable. Your submitted information is then sent to a doctor who reviews your information and confirms your request. From there you can choose your preferred pill or have the doctor recommend one for you.
Then, depending on your insurance situation, up to 3 months worth of birth control is sent to your address for around $0 (with insurance) - $15 (without insurance). When it comes time for a new shipment, Nurx automatically dispatches it to you.
It is important to note that while this app does not require that you have a pap smear or examination you should absolutely have one done at least every 3 years.
Nurx does not require parental permission, but users must be 12 years old or older to use it.
Nurx also provides Plan B emergency contraception, Vaginal rings, and hormone patches.
Currently Nurx only lists California, Washington DC, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Washington, Texas, Virginia, and Armed Forces (Americas, Europe, Pacific) as the locations that it services, but I suggest that anyone in the US who lives in a state that is not listed enter their address and see if Nurx delivers to their area anyway, as my state was not listed when I started using Nurx.
So far I have had an amazing experience with Nurx and I really admire what this organization is doing for people.
