Wassoogett his marke
From Pennacook, of the Wabanaki Confederacy. Wassoogottโs homelands in the southernmost portions of so-called New Hampshire and Maine, and at the northern border of so-called Massachusetts.
Wassoogottโs mark appears on a 1668 document preserving Native testimony after violence at an English truck house (trading post) at Pennacook (now โConcord, NHโ), where government agents were illegally selling liquor to Native people. Commonly referred to in scholarship as the Dickinson Incident, it began around Richard Waldronโs trading house where Thomas Dickinson, a settler connected to the post, was killed. The heretofore unnamed Native man accused of killing him was then also killed the following day.
What began in the colonial record as a murder investigation later exposed something larger: the role of powerful English traders, truck houses, and illegal liquor distribution in destabilizing Native communities while advancing settlement and colonial control.
Signed August 1668. Seen at the Massachusetts State Archives.
Nonnaunuka his marke
Likely Pennacook, of the Wabanaki Confederacy. Their homelands in the southern-most portions of so-called New Hampshire and Maine, and northern borderof so-called Massachusetts. Weโve also seen this name spelled as Nonnaunuska.
Nonnaunukaโs mark appears here, among many othersโ, on a petition that captures the testimony of several Native leaders, including Tahanto, relative to the distribution of vast quantities of liquor by English truck house operators to Native people in the area of Pennacook. The distribution and consumption of liquor by all parties at and around the truck house resulted in the death of a settler and later execution of a Pennacook man.
Signed October 15, 1668. Seen at the Massachusetts State Archives.
The mark of Nahnanacomock.ย
Penacook. Their homelands along the Merrimack river, and at the places where the present-day boundaries of so-called โNew Hampshire,โ โMaine,โ and โMassachusettsโ exist. This document, signed June 12, 1644, is interpreted as a peace agreement, signed by Passaconaway and Nahnanacomock on behalf of the Pennacook, and the Massachusetts Bay Colony.ย
Nahnanacomockโs kin: one source suggests Nahnanacomock is the son of Passaconaway.ย

The name is Winnipiseogee. We think it means โsmile of the Great Spiritโ or โbeautiful water in a high place.โ But weโre not sure. โจYou see, in our obsession with this remarkable, squirming lake, we killed off the local Winnepesaukee people, adjacent subtribe of the ancient #Pennacook. They had been able to settle in here year round, for thousands of years, because this remarkable lake provides resources to survive the frigid winters and bug-infested summers. Easy to see why our greed hooked us on the lake. Itโs a region delightful to get lost in. Only occupying a rough oval of 63 miles in circumference, the actual coastline squirms in and out to produce 288 miles of total shore! There are 264 islands dotting itโs surface, but even then weโre not quite; in drier seasons small bits pop up that could be considered #islands, depending on your definition. This land is brimming with #charisma. Itโs quirks are playful, yet still somehow capture the power of the glacier which made it long ago โ the original #GreatSpirit of the land โ in a whimsical and mystical way. A million or so years ago, the oddball lake plunked itself down next to a small #mountain which was also piled up by the ancient regionโs ever-on-the-go #glaciers as they built the tiny Belknap Mountain range. We foolishly also eradicated the original name for the mountain, so we just call it #MountMajor. The possessiveness of white urbanites can be felt everywhere; the landscape has been tailored and curated to suit the whimsy of almost two centuries of tourists. Those who know #Winnepesaukee celebrate it as a little slice of vacation heaven. And indeed, it is. Yet this noble and magic place is too much treated dismissively, more like a playground than one of the greatest lakes in the Northeastern USA with a wealth of our heritage tucked into itโs million nooks, harbors, and peaks. Fortunately, much of the land is now protected as wilderness preserve. Not nearly enough to honor this magic place, with itโs endless motorboats and lake houses brimming with loudmouth tourists. But at least the small gesture might make the Great Spirit smile a little. โซ๏ธ #boulders #fallfoliage #hiking #akaXN #TheRealXN (at Mount Major, New Hampshire) https://www.instagram.com/p/CF0B1ohjVb4/?igshid=1xj09wcpne8je
