song: The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades Is Out to Get Us!-Sufjan Stevens
Ellie Gains relived the worst few days of her life, three, maybe two (if she was lucky) nights a week.
Graceās withered hand hanging from the bell of the spiral in the maze.
Rel dissolving into a red mist in front of her.
The searing pain of the bullet in her side, and then the hazy, out of body feeling that followed when the seizure began.
Worst of all, she saw Chrys. Eyes clouded over, body cold on the floor.
This had been a bad one. Everything had returned to her. Ellie woke in a cold sweat, tears streaming down her face as she pressed her left hand to her heart, checking that it was still beating in her chest. In her dazed panic she searched the right side of the bed with her free hand.
Where is she?
Where is she?
Looking down and finding the spot empty, she shot out of bed, staggering toward the bathroom, but finding nothing. Bracing herself on the wall, she stumbled along the hallway and into the living room, running directly into a very concerned Chrys.
āEllie? El, hey, what's wrong?ā
āY-You weren't there, I couldn't find you.ā
Ellie sobbed openly now as Chrys gathered her into her arms, holding her girlfriendās head to her chest gently.
āI'm sorry,ā She whispered, āI just went to the kitchen, I didn't mean to scare you. Did you have another dream?ā
Ellie nodded, tears beginning to slow.
āYou're okay, and Iām okay. We aren't in Pellington. Weāre away from all that shit now.ā
Chrys spoke calmly, repeating the reminders she'd been giving herself for nearly two years now. Even in this apartment, three hours outside of Pellington, in this new life, the memories of those nights were hardwired into the two girls.
āI would've died so young,ā Ellie says plainly, and quietly, āI didn't even look that much older than I was back then.ā
Chrys didn't say anything. Just left a lingering kiss at Ellie's temple. The two stood in silence for the morning cold to seep through the floorboards. Chrys finally looked down at Ellie, who had relaxed for the most part.
āIt's still early, let's go back to bed,ā she spoke softly into Ellie's ear.
Ellie tensed immediately, and opened her mouth to object before Chrys spoke again.
āYou don't have to sleep El, but it's warmer in our room.ā
Ellie's face softened, and she nodded, leaving the two girls to pad quietly down the hallway to their bedroom. The room was a perfect mix of them both. Lamps were scattered about on the nightstands and on the desk, filling the room with a warm yellow light. Chrysā records filled milk crates lined up against the wall, and Ellieās medical books were stacked on the corner of the desk. Pictures of the two of them sat atop the dresser with the record player.
Entering their bedroom, Chrys turned the blankets back for her girlfriend, settling her in bed, and went to flip through her record collection. After a few moments, she lifted a vinyl out of the crate, and held it to Ellie for approval. The brunette nodded, smiling softly. Chrys smiled back, and removed the vinyl from its sleeve, setting it on the player, and gently placing the needle down. Soft music drifted from the player and swirled around the bedroom, lifting away the dark mood that settled over the apartment far too often.
Thinking outrageously I write in cursive I hide in my bed with the lights on the floor
Chrys heard the floor creaking, and turned to find Ellie standing nearby with a hand extended to her.
āDance with me?ā
Wearing three layers of coats and leg warmers I see my own breath on the face of the door
And so they danced.
Oh I am not quite sleeping Oh I am fast in bed
Slotting together like puzzle pieces as the early morning sun filtered in through the window. Ellieās arms slung over Chrysā shoulder as she gently held her waist, they swayed to the quiet music.
There on the wall in the bedroom creeping I see a wasp with her wings outstretched
āI donāt know what Iād do without you,ā Ellie whispered, so quietly that Chrys might not have even heard her if their foreheads hadnāt been pressed together.
We were in love. We were in love
In response, Chrys pulled Ellieās wrist down to her lips, pressing a soft kiss to the chrysanthemum tattoo inked into her wrist.
Palisades! Palisades!
Ellie Gains relived the worst few days of her life often, leaving her in fractured pieces that she never knew quite how to pick up on her own.
I can wait. I can wait.
But she never had to do it alone, she had her chrysanthemum.

Mayfair left a lot of information for her team to find, a lot of information about Daylight and Orion, as well as yet-unknown third program. Clearly sheād been collecting it for a long time. But sheād done nothing with it. Why?
Perhaps she couldnāt do anything with it, because the people that it implicated were too powerful. But more likely, she couldnāt use any of the information because it would implicate herself. So she left the information behind, guessing that by the time it was found, her own fate would have already been decided.Ā
We know that she was involved in Daylight. And we know that Mayfair had collected a vast amount of information on Orion. It could represent years of detective work on her part, but to gather that much information without raising any suspicions? Itās a lot more likely that Mayfair had that information because sheād been just as involved with Orion as sheād been with Daylight.Ā
Consider for a moment what Mayfair told Tasha:Ā
Early on in my career, someone powerful approached me, asking for help.Ā It was a big career opportunity.Ā What he was asking me to do was morally ambiguous at best. I went along. Told myself that it was for the greater good, but in my gut, I knew that was a lie. Didn't sleep well back then. Still don't. Things went sideways and that powerful person was nowhere to be found. I was left alone to account for my actions, wishing that I'd trusted my gut.
At the time this conversation takes place, we donāt know that she knows anything about Orion, so we assume she was referring to Daylight. But what powerful man approached her, besides Carter? She was already head of the NYO when she was persuaded to become involved with the Daylight program, so how could it have been aĀ ābig career opportunityā? And how could the head of the CIA help out someone already in the upper reaches of the FBI? So Daylight doesnāt quite work. She must have been referring to something else, something further back in her career. Something like Orion or the mystery file. If she wasnāt yet the head of the NYO, a position like that could have been a hefty incentive to convince her to keep her mouth shut about whatever Orion was up to.Ā
Mayfair being involved with Orion could also explain why pre-Jane and Oscar felt so strongly that she should be punished for her crimes. Daylight was certainly a violation of civil liberties and of US law, but as far as we know, Mayfair only used that information to prosecute known criminals she wouldnāt otherwise be able to put behind bars. Morally questionable, yes. But the argument could also be made that she had a moral obligation to protect the general public (as we see her rationalizing to Weller later). Sophia also seemed quite vehement that Mayfair should be punished, but if it was for Daylight, then Sophia was guilty of the same crime herself. But if Mayfair was guilty of more than just Daylight, the rather extreme response from pre-Janeās group makes a lot more sense.
If Mayfair was involved with Orion, then itās likely that there is information about Janeās life andĀ ādeathā in those files, which could mean that Mayfair might have known who Jane was all along. If she did, it might make her last words to Jane even more chillingly prophetic:Ā āI just wish I could be there to see his face when he finds out what you really are.ā
If Mayfair was offered a big career opportunity in exchange for keeping silent about one or more questionable programs... What powerful man would have had the authority to offer such a position to her? Someone like... FBI Director Pellington, perhaps?
Pellingtonās first action upon taking over the NYO was to appoint Kurt Weller Interim Assistant Director. His second?Ā
In light of Mayfair's arrest, there've been some concerns regarding one of her cases and the time and resources it seems to have been consuming. ...Ā We're putting the entire situation under review. ...Ā [A]ny related investigations are suspended until further notice.Ā I'm shutting down the Jane Doe project.
Now, sure, it could be that he was concerned about the resources. But if that was really the concern, wouldnāt it make more sense to allow the investigations to continue (in light of the benefit to public safety they had been accomplishing, which is pretty much his sworn task in that office) while reviewing the resource usage, and then shut it down if the review indicated that a shut down was warranted? But no, he shut it down just about as soon as his shoes hit that floor. Almost as if he didnāt actually want those investigations to turn up anything else.Ā
Gee, can we think of anyone else who wanted Jane Doe taken out of the loop as soon as she showed up? Shades of Carter perhaps? So Pellington might have the same concerns as Carter-- that somehow Jane Doe or her tattoos could expose him-- but neither Carter nor Mayfair ever mentioned Pellington in connection with Daylight, and none of Mayfairās flashbacks did either. So Pellington must be concerned about something else... Orion, perhaps? Or the third mystery file?Ā
If the Jane Doe project is shut down, that means that Jane Doe is both out of the FBI officeĀ andĀ out of FBI protection. She would be vulnerable and a lot easier to take out permanently.Ā
Of course, now Kurt Weller is bringing her back into the FBI, this time in custody. Given how easily Carter was able to get to Saul Guerrero, I wouldnāt want to take any bets on how safe Jane is in FBI custody. Weller had better get her statement quickly, while sheās still alive to make it.
There is another possibility, of course... Pellington could be on the same side as Janeās old team. Once Mayfair was out of the way-- without him having to get his hands dirty in the process-- he could promote Kurt and wouldnāt need Jane anymore. But if thatās the case... well, she knows a lot about their operation and she just took out Oscar, so eliminating Jane would still be at the top of his to-do list.
Sure, Pellington could be completely innocent. But Oscar and pre-Jane seemed pretty certain that the FBI was rife with corruption. If the Director was a solid guy, a few carefully-placed tips should have motivated him to clean house, right? And besides... how many non-villainous middle-aged white men have we met on this show? Iām kidding. Kind of.
So what do we know? Well, it looks like Mayfair had her fingers in a few more morally-questionably pies than we thought. And also.... it looks like Jane Doe has more to worry about than just a failed romance with Kurt Weller.
