Built in 1926 for the Metropolitan Gas Company’s West Melbourne site, Sir John Grice was a narrow gauge saddle tank engine, a peckett with a 0-4-0 Whyte. It was withdrawn in 1941 and stored until sold privately in 1962, it was sold again  to the Whistle Stop Amusement Park in Frankston in 1965. Puffin Billy  bought Sir John Grice at auction in 1974 and put on static display in the Steam Museum. In 1978 Restoration started and in 1981 Sir John Grice was returned to service painted light green with yellow lining.

Puffing Billy hosts day out with Thomas events, in these events Sir John Grice  is used “Thomas the Tank Engine”. to do so a fiberglass “Thomas” cover is placed on.
