Who needs the nuts when you have bark?
This young tree (Carya illinoinensis) will produce delicious pecan nuts when it is mature. Pecan nuts are eaten around the world but outside of the trees’ native habitat in the southern USA and northern Mexico people aren’t so familiar with what a pecan tree looks like.
The pecan is related to hickories and walnuts and was only recently domesticated for commercial nut production in the 1880’s. In earlier times, Native American tribes such as the Comanches of Texas depended on pecans as a major source of their daily calories by careful stewardship of wild trees.
