In the 1960s, as part of a plan to modernise, the Shah of Iran pushed for a national car industry. The result was the #Paykan, a licenced version of the British-owned Hillman Hunter car, whose parts were shipped to Iran for assembly. The Paykan quickly became the country's most popular car. While symbolically the car itself encapsulated intense sentiments of national pride and identity, the reality of its production and ownership - criss-crossing Europe, America and Iran - exposes a more complicated global story.
