At Circuit Paul Ricard, James Hunt claimed pole position with Niki Lauda right next to him on the grid and Patrick Depailler third, continuing Tyrell's excellent form. Off the line, Lauda sped past Hunt and held a comfortable lead until his Ferrari retired with engine failure. Clay Regazzoni, now second, was close behind Hunt; however, his engine failed, causing him to retire. After this, any challenge to Hunt's lead evaporated, and he went on to win twelve seconds in front of Depailler, who was also now second in the Drivers' Championship standings. Jody Scheckter, in the other Tyrell, was in contention for third until his engine started to fade away, giving John Watson in a Penske third place. It was the first podium finish for both Watson and Penske.

At Long Beach, Ferrari Clay Regazonni took pole position with Tyrrell's Patrick Depailler second, forcing James Hunt and Niki Lauda onto the second row. The top four maintained their positions at the start, and almost immediately, Regazzoni began to pull away. Hunt now tried to pass Depailler for second; they collided; Hunt was forced to retire, and Depailler went wide, allowing Lauda to sail through to second place. Depailler kept third position until a spin dropped him well down the order to seventh, but he charged back up in third after Tom Pryce's Shadow, and Jody Scheckter in the second Tyrrell retired after driveshaft and suspension failures, respectively. Regazzoni went on to take a dominant victory, with Lauda completing the Ferrari 1–2, and Depailler third.
