Sadly director Andrzej Munk died in a car crash during production, but the unfinished film was edited together and completed with the addition of stills and a voiceover by friends and colleagues - so that the film eventually released is part doumentary & part drama. His original footage is all from the concentration camp part of the story (some actually shot in Auschwitz) and it is the later framing device of the central ex SS guard seeing one of her prisoners as a fellow passenger on a cruise ship that is recreated. The relationship between the two in the camp is a fascinating (and harrowing) study of the way those involved try to self justify their part in what is clearly a manifestation of pure evil. This deserves its place in 1001MYMSBYD because the finshed film would clearly have become a classic and the version completed is still not only poweful in itself but a vsluable tribute to a director who was likely to have gone on to do great things.
