This is a WIP I’ve had for forever that I keep saying I should just finish because I don’t think it would be that long, but it’s an AU where Bitty owns/operates a bar with Ollie and Wicks in Providence, where the Falconers like to go. Jack gets traded to the Falconers after being in Dallas and meets Bitty because he always DDs.
The bartender grabs a few more glasses with practiced ease and follows Jack to the table where Shitty is currently blowing straw wrappers at Lardo's head while Ransom and Holster argue loudly over which kegster was the one where someone threw up in Shitty's room. "There you go!"
His friends stop their conversation to proclaim the bartender "an angel" and "literally my favorite person" and the bartender laughs good naturedly like Jack’s obnoxious friends haven’t been scaring off his customers for the last hour.
YES ITS YOUR PROMPT BC I ALSO LOVE THEIR HAPPINESS BETWEEN YR 3/YR 4
its currently 501 words and exactly half a scene BUT imma finish it, aiming for the end of march
have a snippet for your table:
“It’s a date, sweet pea.”
The simple words had inspired one of the biggest grins Bitty had ever seen on his boyfriend’s face. Jack had been ecstatic after winning the cup and smiling like a loon at the parade but he’d also been utterly exhausted and hungover in turn.
Now he’s well-rested, relaxed, and is looking at Bitty like he hung the moon and maybe even a few of the stars. It’s a heady feeling.
“Yeah bud, it is,” Jack said before swooping down and kissing him soundly.
They link fingers after Jack locks the apartment door and Bitty feels the thrill in his stomach at the contact. It still feels like they're getting away with something nefarious.
wip game - drop an ask about a title you want to hear more about, who knows? it may inspire actual words to be written 🤷♀️

A snippet for your table under the cut:
“And you’re sure that no one will know who I am?”
The look Nora levels at him could freeze the Sahara. “Of course I’m sure. No one will be able to trace you just from you posting or streaming. Just follow basic stranger danger internet safety: keep your face out of frame, nothing identifiable in the background, don’t use your real name – that kind of thing.”
“Right, right,” he says, running a hand distractedly through his hair and biting his lip. He’s practically vibrating with the need to get started.
“Alex.” He meets her eyes. “No one is forcing you to do this. If you’re this nervous before even starting maybe you shouldn’t—”
He can’t help the bark of laughter that escapes him. “I’m not nervous, Nora, I’m fucking excited. Plus, it beats retail for extra cash.”
Nora gazes at him steadily for a long moment before nodding decisively. “Just – remember that you can stop any time. And also that I want zero details. I know too much about your sex life as it is.”
“Hey, you were my sex life for a little bit there.”
“Yeah, but now I’m dating your sister, so I can’t really spill the tea to her now can I?” she asks, gathering her bag and heading for the door.
curiosu about what "fic idea every day 4" is all about!
@parvuls did this series of prompts + a paragraph-ish for Check Please using a three part random generator generator. prompt #4 spoke to me in a big way, especially with the tags
another snippet:
Jack’s lip quirks as he hands over his card, but waits till they’ve moved away from the counter to mutter, “Good thing I just got that Cup bonus, eh, Bits? The last time I went to the movies—"
“—tickets were a nickel?”
“And in black and white, yeah,” Jack deadpans, but his eyes are twinkling.
wip game - drop an ask about the title that you want to hear more about, and maybe pull some new words out of the author :D

little did @parvuls know the extent of their power to manifest some zimbits but uhh here you go
_X_
“Hey Bittle?”
“Mphhh.”
“Bittle, you awake?”
“Mphhhhhhhhhh.”
Jack edges into the room, lit only by the twinkle lights above the bed. That part isn't new. As much as Bittle perks up during checking practice and afterwards when they get coffee at Annie’s, Jack can count on one hand the number of times that Bittle has actually been ready to leave on time. Jack’s not a huge fan of a four AM wake up either, but he still does it. The team is important, Bittle’s comfort on the ice is important, and at the end of the day, Jack’s the captain. He has to live up to all their expectations.
What is new is the sweat that Jack can see on Bittle’s forehead even from across the room. He edges closer. Bittle is shaking pretty hard for all he’s wrapped in two different comforters and an extra blanket. He reaches out to shake Bittle on the shoulder.
“Bittle?”
Bittle’s shoulder is clammy. Jack reaches out to feel Bittle’s forehead with his other hand to check and - yup. Bittle’s definitely got a fever. Probably the flu that’s been going around campus in recent days. Jack’s had his flu shot this year already, so he’s probably fine.
He leaves quietly, trying to let him sleep a little more and pads down to the kitchen. He finds both bottled water and gatorade in the fridge. Makes some dry toast in case Bittle feels up to solid food. Grabs the tylenol. Heads back upstairs.
He nudges the door open with his shoulder and sees that Bittle has fully retreated into his bedding, only his hair visible in the soft light.
“Bittle wake up.”
“Can’mayme,” comes from the cocoon.
“Captain’s orders,” Jack says firmly.
Bittle pokes his head out, eyes firmly closed.
“Jack Zimmmermann I have a fever if you think I am getting out of this bed for fucking checking practice in this condition you have another thing coming. They’ll never find your body. Every now and then the NHL commentators will be all: ‘Remember Jack Zimmermann? He was doing so well in college, scouted by the Falconers and Bruins and Habs his senior year, and then just disappeared. Wonder what happened to him.’ Now go ‘way.”
Jack’s never heard Bittle’s accent so thick before, not even after long breaks.
He retreats back into his cocoon, sniffling loud enough that Jack can hear it, even through the blankets.
“I brought you tylenol and gatorade. Toast if you are hungry.”
Bittle’s face is wide with shock over the top of his comforter.
“You did?”
“Yup.”
“For me?”
“For you.”
“And you aren’t going to make me go to checking practice?”
“Of course not Bittle, I’m not a monster.”
“Oh,” says Bittle. “Thank you, Jack.”
“You’d fall over before we even got to Faber anyway,” he teases. Bittle groans.
“Chirp chirp, Mr. Zimmermann.”
Bittle manages to extract himself enough to sit up. Well, to slump up against his headboard, at least. He reaches for the Tylenol weakly. Jack wordlessly pops the top and shakes out two pills, and hands them over. He cracks the top of the gatorade for him and passes that over as well. Bittle knocks back the tablets and puts the gatorade on his nightstand.
“Toast?” Jack asks.
“Not hungry. It’s four in the morning, Jack.”
“Okay,” he chuckles. “Get some more sleep, Bittle. Let yourself get better.”
“‘Kay.”
Bittle’s sliding back down to his mattress, already halfway back to sleep. Jack hovers by the bed, uncertain.
“I can email your professors for you, um, if you want me to.”
“Mhmmkay.”
“I’ll be back to check on you in a few hours after my first two classes,” says Jack. “Do you need anything else before I go? There’s some water here too.”
“Actually, Jack?”
“Yeah Bittle?”
“Come closer, my throat hurts if I talk so loud.”
He leans in, concerned. Should he grab some cough drops? Make tea? Do they even have honey in the Haus right now? Bittle hasn’t been coughing yet, but it’s only a matter of time.
“What is it?”
Bittle cracks one eye open, and Jack almost falls over from the force of the glare Bittle manages.
“Go. A. Way.”
“You got it.”
He has just reached the door when from behind him he hears Bittle one more time.
“Thanks, Jack.”
“Of course, Bittle. Feel better.”
He leaves the room, and before the door closes he hears Bittle sigh quietly, already asleep.
He gets back from his run before anyone else is up and takes it upon himself to do some tidying after his shower. Bittle shouldn’t have to navigate any size mess when he’s in the Haus alone and sick. He puts on his audiobook as he puts the clean dishes away and wipes down the counters, clears the stairs of a couple coats that have been there since the last kegster, and makes sure there’s nothing in the hallway from Bittle’s room to the bathroom. He even empties the bathroom garbage can and makes sure there’s extra bags in case Bittle feels nauseous later. In a stroke of genius he makes signs for the other Haus denizens to be quiet when they wake up and tapes them on their doors. (Shitty’s sign is on their bathroom door.) Satisfied with his morning’s work, he leaves the Haus, heading to the dining hall for a quick breakfast before class.
He’s halfway through his meal that it occurs to him that he’s never fussed this hard over any other friend when they’ve been sick - even Shitty. The thought makes him freeze mid-bite.
It’s probably just because I was the one who found him.
Content with that reasoning, he resumes eating his breakfast, idly planning on what to bring Bittle after his morning classes. He’s pretty sure they sell cough drops at the student union...
would love to hear about 15 + 17 for the fic asks! (-@parvuls)
15. How do you come up with titles for your fics/chapters?
Every once in a while I come up with a title before I write the fic (Pucks and Recreation was one of those) but most of the time I either take a line from the fic or (more frequently) look for song lyrics that seem to go with it. This method can take hours. Sometimes I'll have a song in mind that's inspired a fic but the lyrics don't quite work, so I look for similar songs or search for songs that mention certain a thing or concept that's mentioned in the fic.
A really good example of this is What I want to feel, I want to feel it now, which is a lyric from R.E.M.'s "Strange Currencies." (Which I've been yelling about again over on my other blog because of The Bear.) A key scene in that fic was inspired by a different R.E.M. song, "Nightswimming," but I wasn't able to isolate a lyric that worked well for a title. "Strange Currencies," which has a similar vibe, ended up giving me the lyric for the title.
Slow Show is one where I came up with the title and plot almost simultaneously. I'd known for years I wanted to use that song as a title and as soon as I started writing a fic about Jack and Bitty taking years to realize their feelings, I knew that was going to be the title. It's almost never that easy.
17. What’s something you’ve learned about while doing research for a fic?
I've never written anything where I've had to take a really deep dive into something, but I do end up doing a lot of research about things like: flights and flight times between certain cities to make sure they work with a fic's timeline, hotels in certain cities, landmarks and places in the Boston/Providence areas, etc. A lot of details that seem like they might have been the result of research are very often just inspired by random experiences I've had. (Everything about Jack's job in the mailman Jack fic comes secondhand from my friend who is a postal worker and my own experience going on a ride along with the postmaster when I was a reporter.) In that vein, I'm a parent but my kids didn't necessarily hit milestones at the "typical" ages so often I have to go back and look up stuff like that because while there really is a huge range, I do want those details to feel realistic.
rules: rec three fics (preferably from authors whose tumblr handle you know). each of those three authors should also rec three fics, and so forth. any fandom/pairing. it doesn't matter if it circles back to you - just rec three other fics.
What the Water Gave Them by suburbanmotel - @suburbanmotel
Summary: When Bitty dreams, he dreams of water, of drowning, of going under for the second, third, fourth time. He dreams in vibrant colour. He dreams of fists and feet and bruises that bloom the colour of summer ripe berries on pale pale skin.
Jack dreams in black and white. He dreams of snow, white landscapes of his youth. He dreams of vials and silver needles, silver skate blades. He dreams of water, too, but it’s frozen and unforgiving. When Jack dreams, he dreams of ice, above and below him.
This is such a beautiful character study, it's long and lyrical and really touched me the first time I read it. I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've read it.
2. New Skin by rransom (Scruffy_Wolf) @rransom - @rransom
Summary: The world tells Jack that he’s been living the dream. His doctors tell him that he’s so lucky things turned out the way they did. His parents tell him that he is so happy.
If only he could remember why.
One of my all-time favorites; it just makes me weepy in the best possible way, you know? Jack gets hit at a game, loses his memory and loses Bitty in the process. But then a lot of stuff happens: growth, tears, love. Anyway, read it.
3. Gettysburg by westernredcedar - @thewesternredcedar
Summary: People don’t recognize hockey players out in the world as often as you might think. So Jack is surprised when Providence Falconer Eric Bittle walks through the door and he recognizes him immediately.
No one does angst with a happy ending better than thewesternredcedar. Jack in this will break your heart and then put it back together. Featuring NHL!Bitty.
