‘ i think it’s time for bed. ’ for whoever you want!
“There, “Charlie said and sat back in the chair to admire her work. She had only changed the dressing on Peter’s stitched-up left bicep, but she was still reasonably proud of herself. Taking care of other people had never been her forte.
“Thank you. “Peter stood and slipped a t-shirt over his head.
Charlie took the surgical gloves off and tossed them in the bin. “I think it’s time for bed,” she said, her voice even. “It’s been a long day.”
Peter’s brows drew together in confusion. “What, no. We have to figure out who tried to hurt all those innocent people. And me.”
Charlie stepped forward, putting her hands on the taller boy’s shoulders. “It was an explosion, and you did get hurt.” She pushed him to the bottom bunk and made him sit down. “Banner cleared you for a concussion, but you still hit your head. You need a good night’s sleep.”
Charlie turned back to the desk to tidy away the first aid kit.
“Why are you mothering me? “
Charlie stopped moving. “I’m not.” She took a second to regain her bearings as the accusation had surprised her. “I’m a concerned friend.” The word friend left a sour taste in her mouth, but that’s how it had to be between them, no matter how much Charlie wished it could be different.
She knew he felt it too.
She still had her back turned to him when he took her hand and gave it a light squeeze as if to tell her it was okay. It broke her heart a little more.
They were doomed, and they both knew it.
