He'd practiced his breathing and forced his shoulders to relax, but all that discipline crumbled the second she appeared at the end of the hall.

Small and radiant in black lace and roses, a flower crown on her head like something out of a dream. The crowd faded; only she existed.
Step by step, she walked toward him, eyes locked on his, and he felt it like a punch to the chest. His throat burned, his vision blurred, and all his control slipped away.
He could hear Kirishima and Mina crying on the distance, his mom shouting something, but everything felt distant.
Except her.
Her hand was cold but soft when she reached him. He pulled her closer before the signal, not caring.
She was finally there.
She looked at him through wet lashes and whispered, almost like confessing a crime,
— I threw up like four times from nerves.
Katsuki let out a laugh -short, sharp, real. It burst from his chest like sunlight.
— You look... — his voice cracked and he had to swallow -
You're so damn beautiful.
Kuromi's hands trembled against his. She smiled shyly and whispered.
— You're beautiful too.
She lifted her hands to hold his face, like she had done a thousand times before, and Katsuki's smile grew even brighter.
Stop crying, idiot.
He murmured, wiping her cheek with his thumb, his own eyes full of tears.
— Leave me alone — she replied with a small laugh - You're crying too.
And he was. He couldn't even deny it.
He let out a shaky breath, his forehead almost touching hers, both trying not to laugh through the tears.
For a moment, the ceremony, the guests, the flowers... all disappeared.
There was only her, standing there, her hand in his, the scent of roses and sunset.

• Max lives each day trying (and failing) to separate himself from his father's identity. He goes to school with his friends and just...tries. But most people regard him and the new vks as just that: vks. Except for a few people who get it, including one Poppy.
• Poppy Rose, daughter of the fairy Rosetta from Neverland.
• She's sweet, but don't let her deceive you. Max has seen her go off on several people for irritating her. She's very particular about cleanliness...and slightly controlling. All good natured.
• She goes off on him too sometimes, but that's okay. It makes Max feel like he's just like any other Auradon student.
• He feels drawn to her honestly. He's not much for flowers, but he always accepts the flowers she passes out during the school days (she and her mother have the best gardens in Auradon).
• They're partners in chemistry, her worst subject. He's not that bad given his childhood, so it makes for good conversations.
• He quickly learns that she likes to not pay attention in class. She's a talker. And that she's slightly afraid of his friend Hazel.
• "She ripped Tinkerbell's wings off!"
• "Didn't they grow back, though?"
• "That's not the point!"
• She loves to garden, of course, but she doesn't know what to do with so many flowers, which is why she always hands out flowers at school.
• "Ever think of just not planting new flowers?"
• "I'm the daughter of a garden fairy, what do you think the answer to that is going to be?"
• She flicked him on the forehead for his stupid question.
• Max likes the conversations. He nods along, listens to every word she has to say. She even asks about him too, something no one ever does, though she's careful when it comes to the topic of the Isle — and his father.
• One day Max walks her to her dorm. He never hears the end of it from Hazel. She's actually the worst.
• It’s all going well until word spreads in Auradon that the Mad Hatter is holding the Queen of Hearts hostage in Wonderland.
• And just like that, his father ruined him again. Max has no choice but to help Red save her mother.
• His friends aid him, Red's friend and sister tag along...and —
• Poppy is guilty of overhearing him talking to Hazel about their plans and she wants to help him too.
• "Poppy, what are you doing here?"
• "You expect me not to go to the famous Wonderland? I'm meeting it and helping you — now move it!"
• She jumps after Pink.
• Max is too stunned for words. Hazel and Felix tease him.
• Wonderland is beautiful and dangerous and crazy, and everything is going all sorts of wrong very quickly.
• Poppy learns Wonderland is not as 'wondrous' as it was told to be, especially when there's a madman trying to take it over. She doesn't tell Max this. She knows how frustrated he already is. She helps however she can.
• But his father really is damn crazy.
• In one of her lesser prudent moments, she made the remark 'I don't know how you ever survived him on the Isle'.
• Max didn't let her apologize; she hadn't lied one bit.
• "Everything on the Isle is about surviving, Poppy. You get used to it."
• Poppy couldn't look more disturbed. "What an awful way to live. And I thought living with my mom's constant nagging about cleaniness was a nightmare."
• Max laughed genuinely. Poppy still didn't quite understand the vast difference between Neverland and the Isle. He didn't mind.
• Poppy learns of Max's idea to go to his father's workshop alone. She's not sure that's the best idea. But she can't convince him not to do it nor to let her come with him.
• "You don't have to worry about him, you know," Hazel says.
• "I'm not!" But Poppy's blush is very noticeable, and tease-worthy.
• Hazel doesn't let it go. Poppy stops being scared of her just to be annoyed at her.
• At the workshop, Max sees what he shouldn't have.
• The Oraculum shows him an alternative life in Wonderland. In Wonderland. He had a good dad — they even played chess! — and they both lived in Wonderland. And then he saw her.
• Poppy Rose. Standing across a lake in Wonderland. She looked a bit different in style, just like him, but it was definitely her.
• He stood on the other side of the lake. She waved at him. He waved back.
• "Who are you? You're not from Wonderland. How'd you get here?"
• "My name's Poppy. I'm from Neverland. There's a secret portal in Mermaid Lagoon connecting it to this lake. I don't think anyone knows about it what with Wonderland being sealed off from the rest of the world."
• He saw his and Poppy's friendship grow. She would cross through the portal into Wonderland all the time and he would always be at the lake waiting for her. They talked together, laughed together, always in secret for fear of being caught by the Queen of Hearts' guards. It was nice, and warm, and everything he didn't have today.
• Max mourned the life he could've had. He had a better life and it was stolen from him.
• Poppy doesn't understand why Max made the choice to betray them. But he does. And so does Chloe. Everyone, except for Red, is baffled.
• None of it makes sense but before Poppy can discover the truth, Red somehow saves the day. Poppy knows something is definitely off, but she can't bring herself to demand answers that she's not owed.
• But all kindness has its limits and as much as Poppy's relieved and happy that Wonderland's monarchy has been restored, she can't go back to normal like everyone else has.
• Max knows she's upset and irritated with his lack of explanations, but he made a promise to Red and Chloe never to say anything about the Timelines being changed.
• But Poppy's strong-willed. She refuses to talk to him. No more flowers, not even a 'going off on him' anymore. She'd rather take her chances on her own in Chemistry too.
• It’s hard for Max knowing what he now knows. He sees Poppy from the other timeline and yearns for those moments with her that technically never happened. She practically ignores him now.
• "I can scare her into talking to you again," Hazel offered one day.
• "Please don't."
• It all comes down to a choice: either keep his promise to Red and Chloe and say nothing to Poppy, or break that promise and try to have something with Poppy like their alternate selves did.
