I remember my mom teaching me how to ride my bike. We would count the number of squares on the sidewalk that I got past without falling. I had this huge feeling of pride when I rode past 5! My little one here is working on this in spite of her fear and what an amazing support system she has! Moms and dads, we are it! We are the main source of support for our kids. How present and supportive we are will stay with them all their lives. These shoes have a story. Carlos and I took a trip to Miami last year and we had such a great time being adults! We went about our day as we wanted and soaked in that time together, just us. I packed for comfort and these shoes took me all around Miami. When we got back home, these shoes were gone. I was sad and annoyed because I just bought them and I really liked how comfortable they were. I realized this as I was unpacking and my girls were watching me at that time. In that moment, I realized How I responded was more important, so I said that I was sad to have lost them but that I hoped whoever took them, needed them more than I did. Guess what? I found them a year later but I am glad I chose to react the way I did in that moment. Our kids are always watching. They learn their life lessons, relationship lessons from how we model our own behavior towards ourselves, towards them, and towards others. I have to remind myself of this especially when I am feeling angry, impatient and frustrated. Do your kids know how to pull a fast one on you where they ask you or your partner for something because they know who is more likely to give them what they want? So fun right? Oh, I used to do this and I knew if I wanted something, it was better to ask my dad! My kids have gotten away with this more than a few times and even our pooch thinks she can test the waters with all of us. It’s all fun and games until major consequences or outcomes are at stake and challenging behaviors are reinforced, or your partner feels totally undermined. Parenting on the same page is the key and when we don’t, frustrations, disappointment and not to mention confusing messaging to our kids develop. Mom says yes, but dad says no, so now what? They will go with the decision they like best and then mom or dad is left feeling undermined. We try to avoid this by asking... What did your mom/dad say already? Here’s what I think but let’s double check with mom/dad? (Other partner feels validated and supported!) Communication is key and while we are not the best at this always, we avoid so many missteps when we talk about things in advance for as much as we can, noting what we agree and don’t agree on. It also helps just to communicate in the moment with your kids to let them know you are including the other parent in on whatever is being asked and they will eventually get the message over time and consistency. Spending time with my mom was so wonderful. It had been 19 years since we took a trip just the two of us! Way overdue! It’s so easy being caught up in mom life, thinking I can’t leave because of their schedules, my husband’s busy schedule, their needs.... so many excuses, but now that I did this, I see just how important and needed it was! Moms, we ALWAYS put our kids and family first but please do something for you whatever that looks like. I came back a better mom because I stepped away, had time to for me and to think about what I needed. I came back a better mom and wife.
