Hardbacks: 

To mark your page, bookmarks, papers, receipts, notes, ribbons, or physical objects are allowed.  The pages cannot be bent or damaged in any other way.

If the book comes with a dust jacket, then the dust jacket is kept on the book while it is on the shelf and is removed while reading.  The dust jacked may not be used to mark the page.

No damage may come to the pages or cover, whether intentional or unintentional.  Protect at all costs.

This book may not be written in.

When the book is resting, do not leave it facedown on any surface, it must be marked by an object and fully closed.

Paperbacks:

You may fold the pages to mark them.  This is encouraged.  Any damage to the book or pages adds to the overall ~aesthetic~

Damage is encouraged and should be regarded as evidence of love.  Go ahead.  Spill your coffee on that paperback.

Write all over the book. Even if it’s just for fun.  Document your thoughts and analysis for your progeny.  Pencil, pen, lipstick, eyeliner, and blood are all encouraged to do this.

I don't care what people say. 2nd hand/thrift stores are like a treasure chest. For both books and the most random things. Look at all the nice looking books that I found. Some even look like new!
