because that’s what late-stage capitalism is about: battle of emotions. capitalism has some truly excellent assimilation skills at its disposal, and love is not immune to its veiled attacks. 

love is being weaponized; not just commodified, but actually made part of the emotional arsenal that serves the purpose of pacifying and converting discordant voices. and not just the bourgeois notion of heteronormative love, the radical ones too (that’s how we get rainbow capitalism and performative corporate allyship). 

in jon and martin’s case, their love appears to defy the odds at first, but it is later revealed that it has been a necessary step to secure a new version of the voyeuristic furnace (neoliberalism???). the new reality, where nothing is certain and the enemies are so numerous that the blame gets diffused.
