Today's wine sitting among the wildflowers is the 2016 Rise Up from @azhopsandvines. This is a rebellious blend of Malvasia Bianca and Muscat of Alexandria from the Mimbres Valley AVA of Southern New Mexico, made in Sonoita. This cheerful sunflower yellow-hued white wine has aromas of honeydew melon, and a garden orchard full of gardenia, jasmine, orange blossom, river stone, lemon peel, and dried straw. The palate is full of savory pears, apples, apricot, orange blossoms, gardenia, and acacia blossoms, with lemongrass and thyme on the finish. This wine strikes me as a potentially great pairing for Bratwurst and Sauerkraut... or Green Chili Chicken Enchiladas, done Christmas style. Or Pad Thai. We are upping things to Defcon Barbaresco today with the 2011 Monciraldo Barbaresco. This is an aged son of a gun, as shown by the burnt orange rim of the wine in the glass, which otherwise is a red garnet color. The nose opens with leather, coffee, cardamom, fennel, mulberry, dried rose petals, and dried blackberry. This is a medium-bodied red with high acidity, and there's still some tannins left. The palate of the 2011 Monciraldo is earthy and leathery, with tar, roses, raspberry, mullberry, sandalwood, and Turkish coffee. Join me for today's Pandemic Daydrinking bottle, day 2: N.V. Dei Signori Rosato Brut. VSQ, from the Veneto of Northern Italy. This is a sparkling blend of Corvina, Molinara, and Brachetto. The latter grape is often used for sparkling wines, but I've not seen those valpolicella varietals in other sparkling wines. This wine is a vibrant pink hue. On the nose, aromas of strawberry, bing cherry, and green apple intermingle with toast and flint; these are joined by raspberry, watermelon, and guava on the palate. There's a slight sweetness here, but that's probably more to do with the immensely fruity character of this wine more than any residual sugar. The Dei Signori is a fun, simple party wine; I wish I had a date to share it with. Cigar of the day: Oliva Serie V Melanio gran reserva.
